USF CERT CERT volunteers are also encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking an active role in emergency preparedness projects.

USF's Community Emergency Response Team is a volunteer organization dedicated to promoting, training, and providing education on emergency preparedness within the University of South Florida and its surrounding communities. The USF Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) educates individuals about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT volunteers can assist others in their community following a disaster when professional responders are not immediately available to help. USF CERT may be activated during disasters to support Hillsborough County agencies in multiple roles, including volunteer management, evacuation support and management, damage assessment, resource distribution, and any other duties as needed.

September is National Preparedness Month and we are fundraising this month for SCOPE USA, a small nonprofit who we collaborate with throughout the year.

We teach children and families essential preparedness skills—like how to call 911, what to do during a fire, and how to prepare for both natural and man-made hazards.

Our goal is to have 20 people donate any amount they are able to give. Each donor helps demonstrate the community’s support for preparedness education and building resilience.

Would you consider making a gift to our fundraiser? Every amount makes a difference, and contributions are tax-deductible because SCOPE USA is a 501c3 nonprofit.

Thank you so much for considering it! 💚

Our Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is expanding its Disaster Preparedness Instructor Team, and we’re looking for individuals who want to share their experience, teach lifesaving skills, and make a meaningful impact in our community.

Instructor opportunities include supporting CERT Basic Training, Stop-the-Bleed Workshops, hands-only CPR training, and community preparedness events. Whether your background is as a CERT member, as an EMS, pre-med or nursing, public health, emergency management, youth education, business, or another related field, there are opportunities to put your knowledge and experience to work.

Instructor assignments are based on your training, experience, interests, availability, and program needs—you do not need to attend every training or event.

This is an opportunity to strengthen your own skills while helping others gain the confidence and knowledge to act when emergencies happen. Priority is given to those who have completed the CERT Basic Training course.

Applications for the Fall 2026 Instructor Team due September 30, 2026
