Halloween is an exciting time for kids, but there are potential safety risks parents need to be aware of. Kids are twice as likely to be hit by a car on Halloween night than on any other night of the year. Wearing bright colored clothes gives drivers a better opportunity to see trick- or- treating children. Try avoiding costume masks that can possibly restrict vision. Instead, opt for nontoxic makeup to complete your look. Happy trick-or-treating!

Our Rescue Division has taken their training on the road.
The Rescue Chief and two Quality Assurance Officers conducted a difficult airway refresher training at Station 28 in Sun City, the busiest station in southern Hillsborough County. Station 28 houses five units and 13 firefighters; these units combined run on average calls 40 per day. Even with so many calls, there are some low-frequency skills that are essential in saving lives.
The Quality Assurance Officers covered basic and difficult airway techniques utilizing alternative airways such as Air Q, King Tube, and gum bougies for endotracheal tube placement.

We could get used to these annual visits!
Yesterday, thanks to the Hockey Hall of Fame and the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Stanley Cup was brought to HCFR Headquarters. We are so proud of the Tampa Bay teams and love to celebrate with our community. Our "Champa Bay" firetruck, Quint 9, was the perfect backdrop wrapped with logos from the back-to-back Stanley Cup Champion Tampa Bay Lightning, the Super Bowl Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the American League Champion Tampa Bay Rays. Quint 9 serves the residents of Hillsborough from Station 9 in Brandon, one of the busiest stations in the county. See you next year Stanley! Let's Go Bolts!

Our friends at Waterset Charter School got to put their training into action today. While the kindergarteners were enjoying lunch, a spill in the kitchen triggered the fire alarm. The teachers and students sprung into action and safely evacuated the school. Dr. McBane said the kindergarteners knew precisely what to do since they had just taken a virtual tour to one of our fire stations. HCFR crews got on scene and declared the building safe for re-entry. Great job to the students and teachers, and a big thank you, Mrs. Meyer, for allowing us to share our love for fire safety.

This evening crews from the Riverview and surrounding areas extinguished a fire in a large free-standing garage. The single-story structure was fully engulfed when the first Engine arrived on scene. The crews were able to contain the fire to the garage and stop the spread to the nearby home. One patient was transported from the scene for a medical condition and no injuries were reported by fire crews. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

We had some exciting events this summer, but this one got missed on social media due to COVID-19 staffing challenges.

HCFR is exceptionally proud of the graduates from Fire Academy Class 2021-01 in partnership with Aparicio-Levy Technical College. Firefighter graduations are certainly a time to celebrate all of their hard work and dedication. These are prideful moments for us, our instructors, and of course, the families and well-wishers who attended. Congratulations to all of you!

Fire Prevention Week may be over, but we want you to remember the Sounds of Fire Safety all year!

If your alarm begins to chirp, it may mean that the batteries are running low and need to be replaced. If the alarm continues to chirp after the batteries are replaced or more than 10 years old, it is time to replace the alarm.

Know the difference between the sound of a smoke alarm and a carbon monoxide alarm – three beeps for smoke alarms; four beeps for carbon monoxide alarms.

When a smoke alarm or carbon monoxide (CO) alarm sounds, respond immediately by exiting the home as quickly as possible.

Hillsborough County Fire Rescue (HCFR) responded to a report of an explosion at a residence on Thursday, October 7th, 2021. The emergency call came into the HCFR dispatch center at 4:19 pm from a neighbor who heard the explosion. Upon arrival at 4:28 pm, our crews found severe damage to 75% of the single-family residence at 3330 King Charles Circle in Seffner. As HCFR units arrived, they located two adult residents who were inside the home at the time of the blast and sustained significant injuries. The man and woman were assisted out of the rubble by neighbors; both adults were transported emergency by HCFR to a local trauma facility. The male patient remains in critical but stable condition, and the female patient has been treated and released by the hospital. No other nearby residents or animals were injured during the explosion, and no injuries were noted during the rescue or investigation.

According to Hillsborough County Fire Rescue's Lead Fire Investigator, Dave Tucker, "We quickly mobilized the most highly trained explosives experts in the region to ensure there was no greater risk to the community." The investigation of the incident was conducted with the aid of fire and bomb technicians from the Florida State Fire Marshal's Office, Bureau of Alcohol, To***co, Fi****ms, and Explosives (ATF), and Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office assisting Hillsborough County Fire Rescue's Fire Investigators.

Upon arrival, the male occupant advised the HCFR crews he was actively reloading small arms ammunition inside the house when the explosion occurred. He reported there were six pounds or more of smokeless powder in the immediate area. No evidence discovered points towards criminal charges. The residence was turned over to the homeowners and is a total loss.

150th Anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire - Fishwrap The official blog of Newspapers.com

Today we commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire. On Oct 8, 1871, a fire began in a resident's barn and quickly grew into an uncontrollable blaze, decimating nearly five square miles of Chicago. Approximately 300 people lost their lives, over 17,000 buildings were destroyed, and more than 100,000 people were left homeless. In 1925, President Calvin Coolidge declared Fire Prevention Week a national observance in an effort to promote fire prevention education. As Fire Prevention Week comes to a close, we encourage you to implement fire smart habits in your homes to protect your families throughout the year.

Pictograph: Smoke alarms for the deaf and hard of hearing

Deaf and hard of hearing members of our community do not always benefit from traditional smoke alarms. There are special devices available that serve as a warning system for deaf and hard of hearing residents. Strobe light smoke alarms flash very brightly to alert someone of a possible fire. Pillow or bed shakers work with traditional smoke alarms. These devices are triggered by the sound of a smoke alarm and will shake the bed or pillow to alert the person in the room.

Chirping alarms driving you crazy? Don’t ignore the sound; make a change instead! The constant chirp means your alarm needs new batteries, or the entire alarm may need to be replaced. If your smoke alarms are more than 10 years old, it’s time to replace the alarms. Remember to change your batteries at least once a year, or invest in long-life batteries to reduce the number of battery changes needed. Smoke alarms built with a sealed 10- year battery are also available on the market so you never have to change the batteries for the life of the alarm.
