When you’re building a railroad to nowhere, how do you make the journey worthwhile? …. If you’re railroad magnate Henry Bradley Plant, in the midst of the sand swamps that would be Tampa, you construct the most astonishingly magnificent hotel of its day, then fill it with treasures from around the world. With its splendid Moorish architecture, opulent furnishings, and spectacular tropical gardens,

Plant’s Tampa Bay Hotel attracted a host of celebrated guests, from Teddy Roosevelt to Sarah Bernhardt to Babe Ruth. Plant Museum and the authentically restored rooms of the Tampa Bay Hotel will transport you back to a time of indulgent 10-course meals, waltzing on the verandah and alligator hunting by moonlight…The journey is still worthwhile.

This photo is in honor of our upcoming exhibit, “Gasparilla: A Tampa Tradition,” which opens January 20th!

The photo is from 1922 and features the Jose Gasparilla Pirate Ship on the Hillsborough River just north of the Lafayette Street (now Kennedy Blvd.) Bridge. The minarets, casino, power plant smokestack, as well as the sign near the top of the former Tampa Bay Hotel can be seen in the background.

We are so excited for “Gasparilla: A Tampa Tradition!” This new exhibit runs January 20th – March 3rd and highlights Tampa’s oldest and most fun-loving community festival while exploring more than 110 years of parades, pirate invasions, coronation balls, and more. In honor of the Henry B. Plant Museum’s 90th anniversary, it will feature many items from 1933 Gasparilla.

Admission can be purchased in advance through our website or upon arrival. For those who kept the Victorian Christmas Stroll brochure, there is a coupon for free family admission during this exhibit. We look forward to seeing you!

This is thanks to Museum supporter Sally Thompson. It features her dad, Francis J. (“Jack”) Thompson, who taught English and chaired the Humanities Department at the University of Tampa. Jack is center top, scraping and cleaning the statue, with daughter Alice below, and daughter Sally at the bottom. Both statues are on display in the Museum today.

Countless individuals, like the Thompson family, have contributed in so many ways over the years to help make the Museum what it is today. Simply put; without dedicated support from the community, we would not be celebrating our 90th anniversary this year.

If you have photos you would like to share, please send them to [email protected] with background information so it can be considered for a future post. We have enjoyed seeing photos so far and look forward to seeing more as we continue to celebrate our 90th birthday!

Thanks to everyone who attended our 42nd Annual Victorian Christmas Stroll! We are deeply honored so many in our community chose to celebrate the season with us. It is our true pleasure and privilege to be Tampa’s favorite holiday tradition for another year!

This Stroll was even more memorable because we also had the chance to commemorate our 90th anniversary! You can help us celebrate this milestone and show your support by contributing to our 90 for 90 campaign that will help us further develop and expand community outreach and educational programming.

Your donation can have double the impact right now thanks to the generosity of the Betsy and Steve Chambers Family Foundation, which will match the first $25,000 given to the Museum. This is an incredible opportunity and we hope you will join in today!

Time is running out to see our current special exhibit, “Captain’s Log: Voyages in the Age of Steam!” This exhibit revisits the glamour and spectacle of steamship travel in Gilded Age America and celebrates the central role Plant Line steamships played in the creation of multiethnic Tampa. It also highlights the French operettas that inspired the names of these steamships.

“Captain’s Log: Voyages in the Age of Steam” ends this Saturday and is included with admission to the Victorian Christmas Stroll. Tickets can be purchased online or upon arrival. We look forward seeing you!

Today’s photo is courtesy of Lindell Dye from the 1950’s. It features Lindell Mullen (Dye), Anne Mullen, Elizabeth McMullen, and Linda McMullen sitting on the “Au Coup de Fusil” (At the Ready), a bronze patina sculpture of two hunting dogs outside the former Tampa Bay Hotel. Done by Eglantine Lemaitre, this was the first piece of public art in and it greets visitors outside the front entrance of the Museum today.

To help us celebrate our 90th anniversary, please let us know if you have photos to share of your visit to the Museum over the years. We would love to see them!

Please note, this sculpture is an important piece of Tampa history and visitors should not climb on it today!

This photo is from the early 1890’s and features the Writing and Reading Room. This space was reserved for men while a parlor just off the lobby was for the exclusive use of female guests. The door to the left of the left of the mantle, which is no longer in use, led downstairs to the bar, café, and billiard room.

The Museum has preserved the original objects and furniture from this room and restored the space to reflect its 1890's appearance.

Today’s photo from 1899 features a golfing party on the Tampa Bay Hotel golf course with the building's minarets and dining hall dome visible in the background.

Since golf was becoming increasingly popular in the United States in the late 1800’s, Henry Plant decided to offer the game as an amenity for guests of the Tampa Bay Hotel. He hired John Hamilton Gillespie in 1897 to design the course, who was known for bringing golf to the region when he moved from Scotland to Sarasota. Hamilton designed a links course - the oldest style of golf course first developed in Scotland - which offered a firmer playing surface with natural grass and terrain.

The Tampa Bay Hotel golf course opened in January 1899 and quickly became popular among guests and local residents. As a result, Tampa Bay Hotel Manager A.E. Dick helped establish the Tampa Bay Hotel Golf Club as the first golf club in the area. The course hosted the Florida Golf Association tournament in 1901.

After the Tampa Bay Hotel golf course, John Hamilton Gillespie designed other courses for Henry Plant at several of his Florida hotels. He became the first Mayor of Sarasota in 1902 and is known by locals there as the “Founder of Golf." Gillespie can be seen in the middle of the picture with the golf bag.
