Have a seat! The mud is fiiiiine. 🦏

Rhinos of all kinds have tough skin, but it can still be sensitive to the sun and bug bites! (Those darn mosquitoes, right?) 🦟
Our Indian Rhinos, especially Gronk, enjoy a good roll-around in the mud to protect their skin from the elements. β˜€οΈ This behavior is especially beneficial when the weather gets warmer to keep those bothersome bugs at bay. πŸ›‘

Hay there! Were you aware that hay is a fantastic roughage for many grazing, browsing, and other herbivorous animals that call ZooTampa home? 🌾

Masai Giraffe are browsers, meaning they like eating leaves and other high-growing plant materials. 🌿 When feeding our giraffes, we raise their food high off of the ground to encourage this natural behavior!

I mustache you a question... why do Inca Terns have such fancy feathers?

It's no *tern* of events to expect that these facial feathers are for flair! πŸͺΆThese long feathers act as an indicator of health, acting as a factor in mate selection for this near-threatened species. πŸ₯Έ

Let's highlight an interesting species with an even more interestingly shaped bill! πŸ₯„

🌍️ The African Spoonbill is one of six species of spoonbill, known for its white plumage and pale pink legs! 🩷 Native to Africa and Madagascar, these spoonbills wade through the water, using their sensitive spoon-shaped bills to help them find and eat small fish, 🐌 snails, and other potential prey items. 🐟️

At ZooTampa, this species can be found in our Africa realm alongside another bird with a uniquely-shaped bill, the Shoebill! πŸ‘ž

Penguin Awareness Day is a great opportunity to reflect on how we can conserve this species! 🐧

African penguins are essential to the well-being of their environment by acting as food sources for other animals and transferring nutrients between the ocean and land while also providing valuable ecotourism revenue for the surrounding area.

πŸ—“οΈ This past October, African Penguins were declared critically endangered, making us one step closer to losing this unique and lovable species. As breeding pairs of penguins fall below 10,000, there is now less than 1% of the population numbers that this species boasted a century ago. ⏳️

Thankfully, conserving this species can be easily accomplished from the comfort of your own home and grocery store! One of the main ways we can help this species is by finding sustainable seafood on SeaFoodWatch.org. Additionally, we can support conservation organizations like the South African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) and the penguins here at ZooTampa by symbolically adopting a member of our African Penguin flock!

How does that saying go? Let sleeping llamas lie? πŸ€”πŸ’

Okay, maybe that's not how the saying goes, but it is words to live by! πŸ¦™ Our llamas, like Angie here, may be seen laying down - very still - during their restful periods throughout the day. Much like any Floridian in weather under 60 degrees, they are taking the time to warm up in the sun and potentially take a much deserved nap. 😴

Our manatee care team has been extremely busy this winter, continuing our efforts with the recent release of three manatees at TECO's Manatee Viewing Center this past week.

On Wednesday, we released Brisk, a manatee who initially came to us in January 2024 with cold stress. Over the year, Brisk made a full recovery and is now weighing in at 785 pounds! Yesterday, we had the privilege of releasing Icing, a manatee rescued from Bradenton in January 2024 due to cold stress, along with Vamo, a repeat rescue due to cold stress. As part of Vamo’s case, he was tagged by another of our Manatee Rescue & Rehabilitation Partnership partners (MRP), the Clearwater Marine Aquarium Research Institute and will be monitored for appropriate feeding and migratory behavior.

This time of year, TECO’s Manatee Viewing Center, is home to many manatees seeking warmer waters as temperatures drop. It's important to remember that long-term exposure to water temperatures below 68 degrees Fahrenheit can be detrimental to manatees. It is essential for manatees to find warm water on their own. By releasing this pair into the warm waters near TECO, we hope to ensure their success in the future. One of the most rewarding experiences is being able to release the manatees we have successfully rehabilitated.

ZooTampa is one of four federally permitted critical care facilities dedicated to protecting and caring for sick, injured, and orphaned manatees.

This past year, Florida was greatly affected by major hurricanes Helene and Milton, with roughly two weeks between each major storm. The impacts of these storms were felt throughout our community and in these times, it’s important to recognize how we come together to help one another.

ZooTampa’s ZooSchool sustained some damage, but our focus was on providing a stable environment for our students who experienced loss in the wake of the hurricanes. Luckily, our friends at Interlaken preschool aided us in our efforts by providing essential items and toys in addition to the custom booklets that helped us learn about the students from the school!

Learn more about the impact students at Interlaken preschool made from Christy Taylor, our Early Childhood Education Manager.
Thank you to everyone at Interlaken Pre School for supporting Zoo School!

Be honest, how many times have you assumed that the Scarlet Ibis is a flamingo? 🦩

While the Scarlet Ibis is an entirely different kind of bird from flamingos, many people can get confused by their pink coloration. 🩷 Don't worry, we listen and we don't judge. 🀐

πŸ“ Scarlet Ibis are smaller than flamingos with a large curved beak and a tendency to roost high off the ground. 🌳 You can find our Scarlet Ibises and learn more about them in our Canopy Aviary!

Thank you to our friends at the Elephant Human Relations Aid (EHRA) for sending us this video highlighting our partnership and the amazing work that we can accomplish as a team! 🐘

Through our partnership with the International Elephant Foundation, ZooTampa continues to partner with EHRA Sustainable Environmental Education for Development (S.E.E.D) project. 🌱 This year, we provided support for local learners to attend Eco Camp, a weekend program focused on learning and connecting to the environment in Namibia.

We are thrilled to continue this partnership through 2025 and look forward to continuing to make a difference together!

Ever found yourself wondering why our two Bald Eagles, Ross and Glory, call ZooTampa home? πŸ€”πŸ’

This Save the Eagles Day, we want to remind everyone about the importance of saving individuals of a species in addition to all Eagles as a whole! Ross and Glory are two rehabilitated, non-releasable eagles, meaning they would not be able to thrive in the wild. πŸ¦…

πŸ–οΈ The Florida Wilds at ZooTampa is home to many different native Floridian animals that have been rescued and deemed non-releasable by conservation officials. πŸ—žοΈ Ross and Glory play an important role as ambassadors for our natives species right alongside our manatees and Florida panthers.
