We are so excited to hold our first ever Justice in Action, a summer program for both undergraduate and law students to get an inside look at prosecution and public service law.

The afternoon started with an “Anatomy of a Case” led by Assistant State Attorney Chinwe Fossett. Students had the opportunity to take a deep dive into a real homicide case from investigation to prosecution. They also got to hear from a panel of attorneys discussing everything from law school to career paths and the life of a prosecutor.

Thank you to everyone who joined us today!

State Attorney Suzy Lopez was honored to attend the Our Heroes' Memorial Golf Tournament hosted by the Tampa Police Benevolent Association - Tampa PBA. This tournament raises funds to benefit Tampa police officers lost or wounded in the line of duty and their families.

We also appreciated reconnecting with Cindy Roberts, whose husband, Tampa police officer Cpl. Mike Roberts, was killed in the line of duty in 2009. She has since become an incredible advocate for other spouses of fallen officers and works to raise awareness about the sacrifices families of law enforcement officers make every single day.

Wellness and public safety go hand in hand. State Attorney Suzy Lopez was honored to speak at the Radiance of Wellness Gala hosted by Enlightened Florida, where community leaders came together to celebrate the organizations and individuals helping people live healthier, stronger lives.

The State Attorney told the crowd that important work happens before a crime ever occurs. She spoke about the importance of mental health treatment, mentorship, prevention programs, and community partnerships that help people get the support they need before they enter the criminal justice system.

"The healthiest communities are the safest communities. When we invest in people, we invest in the future of Hillsborough County."

Thank you to Enlightened Florida for the invitation and for the work you do every day to strengthen our community.

🚨Guilty of First-Degree Murder🚨

A jury found defendant Curtis Williams guilty of first-degree murder in the shooting death of another man outside the Tally Ho Bar and Lounge on 56th Street back in 2025. Witnesses testified that Williams was wearing a mask when he approached the victim standing by his vehicle in the bar’s parking lot. Jurors watched surveillance video where several shots of gunfire could be heard.
Witnesses told jurors that Williams met up with family members near the parking lot to change clothes before going to the hospital to be treated for his own gunshot wounds.

Williams faces a mandatory sentence of life in the Florida State Prison. Assistant State Attorneys Elyse Roenick and Patrick Murphy successfully prosecuted this case.

⚖Man Granted $100,00 Bond on First-Degree Murder Charges⚖

A judge granted Marqui Newton a $100,000 bond at a pretrial detention hearing this week. Newton is accused of shooting and killing a 36-year-old man at the Del Rio Apartments in 2016. The case remained unsolved until recently.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office continued to pursue leads in the case over the last decade and additional DNA testing tied the defendant to this crime.

If Newton bonds out of jail, he will be on house arrest and required to wear a GPS monitor. An arraignment date has not yet been set.
