FYI...................

Smoke is moving into South Central and Interior Alaska this morning from some of the 45 active fires in Southwest Alaska. The more than 100,000 acre increase from yesterday is due to these fires continuing to grow. Additional firefighting resources are arriving in Alaska to help with suppression efforts.

The overall weather this weekend has been cooling in the west and warming to the east. Winds are turning today to now come out of the southwest, changing fire spread concerns as the threat changes directions. More thunderstorms across the Interior today will bring some scattered rain but may also spark are fires. Looking ahead to next week, conditions will moderate in the southwest, though not much rain is expected. Fire concerns will shift to eastern Alaska next week.

FYI.......................

The National Interagency Coordination Center ( ) Predictive Services released the significant Sunday. Fire activity in Alaska is still minimal, though there has been an uptick in small human starts along the road corridors of Southcentral Alaska.

One large fire in southwest Alaska burned over 10,000 acres, which is remarkable for this time of year. As we head into , we can minimize the catastrophic impacts to our communities by focusing on .

More highlights from the outlook for Alaska:
Below normal fire potential is expected in portions of Interior Alaska during May, with a return to normal conditions in June that will continue through August. The near record-breaking snowpack is rapidly melting around the state, but the late melt means a slow start to the . Parts of the Interior will not be snow-free for another one to two weeks, then the gradual defrosting of ground fuels begins.

There are no early indicators regarding the severity of fire season in June or July. Activity during this part of the season depends on the convergence of dry fuels, weather, and ignition sources. Therefore, the forecast is for a return to normal conditions during June. Normal fire potential is forecast for most of southern Alaska throughout the spring and summer. Through May, temperatures will continue to warm, with overnight lows remaining above freezing becoming more frequent by mid-month. Climate Prediction Center forecasts indicate increased chances for warmer than normal temperatures for parts of northern and eastern Alaska this summer, and a likelihood of wetter than normal conditions in the northwest and east. The temperature forecast is typical of the last few summers; however, the precipitation forecast is less certain.
