We just announced our 4th annual 4-H/FFA t-shirt contest winner. The youth and volunteers will get shirts with this on the front and our generous sponsors on the back. Watch for them at the Linn County Fair, open to the public this year July 16-18th.

We have a WINNER for our 2026 fair t-shirt. Congratulations to ROXANNE MCMILLEN! We look forward to seeing her great design printed on the front of the Linn County Fair t-shirts.

Thank you to everyone that participated this year. There ARE so many creative designs making it tough to pick just one winner. We've enjoyed seeing them hang at the office and hope you'll watch for them all to be posted on social media and acknowledge them all.

Turns out slugs really, really love bread dough.

Research from Oregon State University found that bread dough was the most successful slug attractant tested, outperforming everything else researchers offered them. In one instance, more than 18,000 snails were trapped in just 48 hours.

“We gave them a choice of food and they consistently went for the bread dough,” said Rory McDonnell, OSU associate professor and Extension gastropod specialist. “They really, really like it. They went bonkers for it.”

So how can home gardeners use this research? By making what we lovingly call… slug slurry.

To make a bread dough slug trap:
• 1 cup flour
• 2 cups water (plus more as needed)
• 1 packet yeast
• Small container like a yogurt or cottage cheese tub

Mix ingredients into a loose slurry and pour into the container. Dig a shallow hole in the garden and place the container so the rim sits at or just above soil level. Slugs are attracted to the fermenting dough and fall into the liquid. (The liquid itself doesn't kill them, unless they drown. It acts as bait, drawing the slugs in. You may have to "dispatch" the slugs yourself.)

Check and refresh daily. The mixture works best when kept moist.

Prefer hand-picking instead? Use less water to create a thicker dough blob and place it directly in the garden.

One important note: keep dogs away from bread dough in the garden.
