Kaaterskill Falls

Kaaterskill Falls Kaaterskill Falls is a two-stage waterfall of Kaaterskill Creek, located in the eastern Catskill Mountains of New York.

Kaaterskill Falls is a historical two-stage, NY waterfall and hiking trail where travelers can fall in love and be inspired by beauty in a sort of primeval Eden. The waterfalls are one of America's oldest tourist attractions, being depicted or described by many books, essays, poems and paintings of the early 19th century. Long before Alexis de Tocqueville's famous essay on America, Kaaterskill Fal

ls was lauded as a place where a traveler could see a wilder image, a sort of primeval Eden. The two cascades total 260 feet (79 m) in height, making it one of the highest waterfalls in New York, and one of the Eastern United States' tallest waterfalls. Beginning with Thomas Cole's first visit during 1825, they became a subject for painters of the Hudson River School, setting the wilderness ideal for American landscape painting. The Falls also inspired "Catterskill Falls", a poem by William Cullen Bryant.

Remembering Marcel and sending thoughts to his family.

IN MEMORIAL: Pilette, Marcel DELMAR Marcel Pilette, 58, of Delmar, died December 27, 2009.

New York State Police are investigating the death. They believe that Marcel Pilette was alone at the top of the Falls. They have not ruled out su***de, but they do believe that it is most likely an accident. There was a lot of ice near the top of the Falls. Most of the area around the Falls slopes downward. This makes it very unforgiving if the hiker slips. It is almost impossible to recover before slipping off the top. The State Police received a phone call around 1:30 PM on December 29, 2009 that the body of a man was at the bottom of the upper Kaaterskill Falls.

Born in Barre, Vt. to Evelyn and Louis Pilette. Survived by his wife, Noreen; daughters, Jaclyn and Malissa; son-in-law, Andrew; and five siblings and their families; and many good friends. A memorial service will be held Sunday, January 3 at 1:00 p.m. at Christ Church United Methodist, Troy. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ Church United Methodist, 35 State St., Troy, NY 12180.
