Three Rivers SWCD had a great time yesterday at the Summer Reading Challenge Kickoff Party at Essex Public Library! This year’s theme, “Unearth a Story,” encourages readers to explore new ideas through books, programs, and local experiences.

We brought our interactive soil tent, and community members tested their knowledge of soil, water, and wildlife by spinning our trivia wheel. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to learn and have fun with us!

Please join us in welcoming Jackie Kay to the Three Rivers SWCD team as our Agricultural Administrative Assistant!

Here’s a little bit about Jackie:

“Hi, I’m Jackie Kay! I’m excited to be joining the agriculture industry and eager to learn as much as I can along the way. I enjoy being part of a team and taking on new challenges. When I’m not working, you’ll usually find me spending time with my amazing husband and our sweet dog, riding motorcycles, or curled up with a good book.”

We are excited to have Jackie as part of the Three Rivers SWCD team!

Soil Science with Girl Scout Troop 406 🌱

Three Rivers recently had the opportunity to host the Daisies and Brownies of Troop 406 for a soil program.

Grace, our Education and Outreach Coordinator, introduced the group to how soil supports plant growth and why soil health is important for our environment. The scouts wrapped up by making their own “Soil Babies,” building on what they learned in a creative way!

To close out Soil Stewardship Week, we’re proud to highlight our 2025 Outstanding Stewardship Award recipient, Langdon Townsend of Queenfield Farm in King William County.

This video shares the story of Queenfield Farm and the conservation practices that help protect and sustain their land for future generations.

It’s a great reminder that soil stewardship starts with the people who care for it every day.

Today’s soil spotlight

Each acre of healthy farmland cycles tons of organic material through plant growth, roots, and residue every year helping build and maintain strong, productive soil.

Agricultural conservation practices like planting cover crops and reducing soil disturbance help keep that soil in place, prevent erosion, increase farm productivity and profitability, and protect nearby habitats. 🌾🚜

Earlier this month, Three Rivers was proud to sponsor a tour in our district for Virginia Tech Agricultural Technology students, focused on precision agriculture and the tools being used at Thomas Neck Farms.

It was a great chance for students to see how this technology is used in the field and learn more about how it’s applied day to day.
