Woodlawn

Woodlawn Wood Lawn/ Trible House, Circa 1750. Most noted as the home of the Trible family 1870 - 1970. It is now the home of Brother Mark Jenkins, OSF and his dog Snow.

Also seven former residents still roam the halls along with several spirits that roam the property. The mantles in the house are period, but not the originals. The house was broken into during the 1970s restoration and the mantles were stolen. The house has around 1100 square feet of living space. Atway Norris Trible gave birth to nine children in the house. 5 of those children were given away. D

uring the Trible era the basement was used as the common area. The rooms on the first and second floors were used as dormitory style bedrooms. The 4 children not given away Elizabeth, Mary, Robert and Drew never married and stayed with their mother unit she died in the 1920s. After Atway's death the 4 remained at Woodlawn until their deaths. The father, Samuel Trible died young in 1890 and was the first burial at Trinity United Methodist Church. There is still a lot of mystery surrounding his death. The house is a side hall structure with two rooms on the basement and main floor levels and one room and hall on the second floor. The rear section of the basement houses the kitchen which is the cellar of the original one room dwelling built about 1750. The current house and the front portion of the basement were constructed in the late 1700s. The reconstruction of front porch in 2012/2013 was made possible with a grant from NMPS. The house contains much of its original wood work and doors. Ladders used to access the three floors were replaced with stairs in the 1870s. The house had no running water or electricity until the late 1970s. The house and grounds have been the subject of three paranormal investigations and other paranormal groups have expressed interest in doing investigations in the future. A fourth paranormal investigation is scheduled for early 2016. The paranormal investigations suggest that there are up to seven spirits roaming the house and several more patrol the grounds. It seems that a long standing feud between the Tribles and other families over ownership of the house continues on beyond the grave. In 1968 when Robert Trible put Woodlawn up for sale 15 people file suite in Essex County Court over the ownership of Woodlawn. Two of the plaintiffs were Robert's own brothers. The Court ultimately ordered that Robert was the rightful owner. Evidence for the trial included unrecorded wills dating back to 1860.

Last week reserch revealed that 9 enslaved persons resided here in 1846. I will be making a trip to The Library of Virginia to get copies of the 1846 inventory of Woodlawn, so that the names of those enslaved here are never forgotten.
