📢 Town of Tarboro Public Notice – Mask Ordinance Update

At Monday night's Town Council meeting, the Council approved an amendment to Sec. 11-16 of the Town's mask ordinance to remove the exemption for all children under the age of seventeen (17) years.

This change was made following the recent assault at Braswell Park, where juveniles were wearing masks to conceal their identities during the incident. The amendment is intended to strengthen public safety and provide law enforcement with another tool to help deter criminal activity involving concealed identities.

The ordinance continues to include exemptions for:

(1) All workers while engaged in a work wherein a covering is worn for physical safety and protection against occupational hazards or because of the nature of the occupation, trade or profession

(2) Persons wearing traditional holiday costumes

(3) Persons while engaged in theatrical productions or masquerade balls

(4) Persons wearing gas masks prescribed in civil defense drills and exercises or emergencies.

(5) Per N.C.G.S. 14-12.11(6), Any person wearing a medical or surgical grade mask for the purpose of preventing the spread of contagious disease.

PRESS RELEASE

On the evening of July 12, 2026, the Tarboro Police Department responded to a large gathering of juveniles at Braswell Park that escalated into a physical altercation. During the incident, one juvenile sustained lacerations and received medical treatment ECU Health for their injuries.

This incident remains under active investigation, and investigators are working to identify all individuals involved. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has photos, videos, or other information that may assist investigators is encouraged to contact the Tarboro Police Department at 252-641-4247. Information may also be submitted anonymously.

The Tarboro Police Department also encourages parents and guardians to speak with their children about the dangers associated with attending or organizing so-called "Teen Takeover" events. These events can quickly escalate into violence, placing participants and bystanders at risk of serious injury and potential criminal charges.

We appreciate the continued cooperation and support of our residents as we work to thoroughly investigate this incident and hold those responsible accountable.

Honoring the Retirement of K9 Spartan

We recently recognized the retirement of one of the Tarboro Police Department’s finest, K9 Spartan.

After 9 years of honorable service to the Town of Tarboro, K9 Spartan officially retired on June 30, 2026. Since joining the department on June 1, 2017, Spartan has faithfully served alongside Lieutenant P.B. Owens, protecting our community with loyalty, courage, and dedication.

Throughout his career, Spartan played an invaluable role in keeping our community safe. His hard work, commitment, and service have left a lasting impact on our department and the citizens we proudly serve.

As a token of our appreciation, Chief Rick W. Mann presented Lieutenant Owens and K9 Spartan with a Letter of Appreciation and a commemorative plaque recognizing Spartan’s distinguished career.

Please join us in thanking K9 Spartan for his years of faithful service and wishing him a long, happy, and well-deserved retirement filled with rest, treats, and time with his family.

Over the holiday, the Tarboro Police Department received a generous donation of water and chips from Farmer's Home Furniture.

We, like everyone else, are over this heat wave, so a big thank you for keeping the Tarboro Police Department fueled and hydrated!

Whether we're out answering calls, working community events, or just trying to survive a busy shift, thoughtful donations like this go a long way and are truly appreciated.

On Saturday, June 06, 2026, the Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office GHSP Traffic Unit hosted a traffic safety checkpoint/saturation patrol in the Princeville, Tarboro, and Rocky Mount areas of Edgecombe County. We would like to send special thanks to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Tarboro Police Department, Nash County Sheriff's Office, Pinetops Police Department, ATF, Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office Detention Staff, Edgecombe County Communications, NC Forensic Test for Alcohol Branch Bat Mobile, and the Edgecombe County Magistrate's Office. This event yielded the following results.

The Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office is trying to locate Angel Hinton. She is a 14yo female runaway from Princeville NC. She was last seen May 19th around 9:30pm. She was last wearing a black sweater, brown and tan striped pants and a pink bonnet.

Last seen in Princeville area, Angel has been known to frequent Wilson NC, as well as the Greenville NC areas.
