Citizens Alliance for Progress, Inc., (CAP), is a non-profit, community based, multiracial, civic organization. Services that promote enhanced quality of life.

Citizens Alliance for Progress also known as CAP has been covering the needs of the entire community for over 30 years! Founded in 1982 by a group of concerned African-American citizens living in the heart of Tarpon Springs, Florida. CAP was organized for the sole purpose of acquiring and renovating the previously abandoned Union Academy Elementary School. The Union Academy School was the only sc

hool that African-Americans could attend in Tarpon Springs during segregation. However, by the mid- 1970’s, Pinellas County School District decided to stop using the facility and boarded it up. It eventually deteriorated and became an eyesore in the community. Union Academy represented many fond memories to the community and students that began their formal education there. Former students and other members in the community wanted to see the building preserved, and once again used to serve the citizens of Tarpon Springs. Since the beginning… Our mission has been to serve area residents by sponsoring programs and events for the purpose of providing support to families and to strengthen the neighborhood in which they live. Over 30 years later we seek to continue being the provider of choice for community-based services. Incorporating programs such as Educational Support, Youth Development and Family Support Services. Our Educational Support Department provides many faucets to ensure academic success. For example: The Academic Enhancement Program is an after school program for students in grades K-12. Providing homework assistance, customized subject tutoring and test preparation programs to help students of all ages succeed. During the summer months, our students have the opportunity for continued learning through our Enrichment Camp. Offering academic enrichment through Mathematics, Reading, and Technology. Meanwhile, the Youth Development department collaborates with Educational Support Services to focus on maximizing our youth potential and to prepare them for future endeavors. Using an innovative approach to health & wellness, experiential learning and Character building This programs implements activities such as Play Productions, Karate Classes, and Flag Football. Our goal is to make sure that our children are equipped to succeed in every aspect of life. We are committed to transforming and enabling our students to realize their potential as lifelong learners and successful contributors to society. As well, We recognize the importance of family. Therefore, our Family Support program embraces a mission to promote healthy development by helping parents to enhance their strengths. We provide families assistance in order to help them maintain a safe and stable home. Services include emergency financial assistance, parent education, home visits, school-linked services with a family advocate, and agency referrals. A look back at our Summer Enrichment Camp trip to Busch Gardens! 🎢

Our scholars went beyond the rides, exploring the physics of roller coasters, studying animal habitats, and learning about STEM careers. As investigative journalists, they discovered that some of the best lessons happen outside the classroom.
