The Department gathered last night for our annual Swearing in of the new officers and Chiefs. As we end Chief Derivan’s term, we can’t thank him enough for serving four terms as this Departments Chief Engineer. Pat has been an incredible leader, mentor and friend to many over the years. As Chief Derivan steps down from the spotlight, he will continue to work behind the scenes to further his dedication to his passion.
Stepping up to fill the role is Chief Raymond J. Tuohy.
Chief Tuohy has been a proud, dedicated and active member of the Tarrytown Fire Department since June 1997. He comes from a long and proud line of family who were and currently are career firefighters and is honored to serve his community in this capacity.
Chief Tuohy has a long record of training which has prepared him well for his role as chief of the department. His knowledge and training has placed safety in the forefront of his firefighting mission.
Chief Tuohy has held many positions within the Tarrytown Fire Department. These include lieutenant, captain, safety officer, warden, and driver. There have been some notable achievements in Chief Tuohy’s career. These include four lifesaving commendations. Twice, he was recognized as a member of a group that received Firefighter of the Year. Other commendations include service during the 911 tragedy; Hurricane Sandy; and unit citations. Most recently, Chief Tuohy received the Make the Difference Award from the Southern Westchester BOCES Center for Special Services. This award was his personal favorite as Chief Tuohy was recognized as being caring, patient and valuable in the lives of children with special needs.
Despite Chief Tuohy’s jovial side in life, at an emergency scene, he is calm, cool, collected, communicative and all business. Safety of the members and the community at large are paramount to him.
Chief Tuohy’s four main goals this year are:
1. safety to preserve the lives of firefighters, the public and property;
2. to ensure effective emergency response and reduce the risks in an inherently dangerous profession;
3. to encourage growth by enlisting more volunteers as a viable cost saving measure to the taxpayers of the Village Tarrytown; and
4. to continue in depth and involved department fire training.
Supporting Chief Tuohy and his vision are a pair of Hoyt’s. Yes, a father and son duo. Bobby Hoyt (2462) has been member of the department for more than 40 years and has served in every capacity in the department. While Bobby celebrated his own promotion, he was able to stand by proudly while he watched his son, Captain Justin Hoyt step see his own promotion to second assistant chief.
Captain Justin Hoyt of Consolidated Engine, Engine 77, has been a member of the department for over a decade. A highly qualified and regarded leader amongst the membership, Captain Hoyt has truly earned the opportunity to serve the department in this capacity. Justin is supported by his wife Melissa and their newborn daughter Tessa as well as enough eager babysitters to fill an NFL team.
And so it was, two Hoyts and a Tuohy ready to lead and keep things moving forward.
Best of luck to all of the Chiefs, Deputy Chiefs, and Firematic Line Officers of the department!
