This exhibit honors the courage and sacrifice of the men who fought in the Pacific during World War II. Featured here are a U.S. Marine Corps uniform and a captured Japanese flag, silent witnesses to one of the war's most brutal campaigns.
The Battle of Guadalcanal, fought from August 1942 to February 1943, marked the first major Allied offensive against Japan and became a turning point in the Pacific.
Among the many fierce engagements of the campaign was the Battle of Alligator Creek in August 1942, where U.S. Marines repelled a determined Japanese attack near Henderson Field.
The battle demonstrated the tenacity of the Marines and foreshadowed the hard-fought struggle that would unfold across the island in the months ahead.
