It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of our dear friend and dedicated self-advocate, Christi Hockel Davenport, on Saturday, April 25th.
Christi was a trailblazer and a cherished member of our community. Since being elected to the Board of Directors in 2003, her leadership and passion have been instrumental in the formation of the Self-Advocate Council (SAC). Many of you may remember her presence at our conventions and was Keynote speaker during the 2009 Sacramento Convention.
Christi facilitated many Y&A workshops over the years, including her memorable presentation on obtaining her driver’s license, which inspired countless individuals to pursue independence.
Beyond her advocacy, Christi’s life was filled with remarkable achievements and deep connections:
• A Fellow of the Townsend Institute at Concordia University, Christi served as a valued staff member at a Catholic school in Dallas, where she was honored as the 2022 Outstanding Catholic Educator.
• An accomplished dancer and performer for 12 years, she inspired a Dallas theatrical troupe and the documentary film "Into the Spotlight."
• Shortly before her illness, the Daughters of the American Revolution recognized her as an outstanding woman in American history!
Christi found love within this community, marrying fellow board member Austin Davenport after meeting at the NDSC convention in Minneapolis. Together, they traveled the country sharing the story of their life and marriage.
We invite you to join us in honoring Christi’s extraordinary legacy. Her spirit, advocacy, and many contributions have left an indelible mark on all of us.
