HEAT ADVISORY: A heat advisory is in effect for the Detroit area today, Wednesday, June 10. The heat index is expected to get into triple digits. The alert is for Wayne, Lenawee, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland and Washtenaw counties from noon until 8 p.m.
Be careful, because heat and humidity can cause illness.
Drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned areas and out of the sun and check on relatives and neighbors if possible. Do not leave children or pets in unattended vehicles because car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
Take extra precautions when outdoors. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing. Limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening hours. Take action if you experience symptoms of heat exhaustion and/or heat stroke.
Storms are expected this evening and tonight. Tomorrow (June 11) is expected to be another hot day before the temperatures fall back into the 80s on Friday, June 12. The City of Taylor will continue to monitor the situation. Return here for updates.

CAN WE TURN UP THE AIR? It doesn’t come as a surprise to most City Hall visitors that the building has needed heating and cooling upgrades for some time. Replacing the HVAC system in not only City Hall but several other buildings – including the Lakes of Taylor Golf Course clubhouse – has been underway all summer. These photos show just some of the work being done in the large City Council Chambers, along with the reconstruction and upgrade of the HVAC housing unit next to City Hall in Priebe Plaza.

CITY COUNCIL: The next two meetings of the Taylor City Council – June 16 and July 7 – will be held at the William Ford Senior Activities Center. The senior center is located at 6750 Troy, north of Ecorse Road. The council meetings will continue to begin at 6:30 p.m. and remain open to the public.
Council meetings will take place in the main banquet room, which offers ample seating for all attendees. Please enter through the main entrance on the east side of the building (Troy Street side), as this entrance features an ADA-compliant door system and provides the best access for the public. City staff will be onsite beginning at 5:30 p.m., one hour before the meeting start time, to ensure the building is open and accessible.
The heating and cooling system in City Hall is being replaced, and much of that construction is taking place in the Council Chambers.
Because of this shift, these council meetings will not be cablecast live on Wow and Comcast. The livestream feed will shift to YouTube. The meeting will be re-cablecast on the government access channels of Comcast and Wow and will be housed in its usual location on the city’s website at cityoftaylor.com.
NOTE: Monday evening council study sessions will continue to be held at City Hall in the study session room.

HONORING THE LATE DOROTHY WEST: Dorothy West was a legendary figure in Taylor politics, serving as the first female and longest-serving clerk in City of Taylor history. She also served as the City Council’s first female chairperson while holding a seat on City Council from 1977-79 and again from 1981-87. Current Clerk Cindy Bower fondly remembers Mrs. West, who passed away in 2012. The marquee on the corner of Pine Street and Goddard is named in Mrs. West’s honor. City Councilman Gerald Thomas and Bower took time today to spruce-up the area, planting flowers and weeding. “This has been on Cindy’s mind for quite some time,” Thomas said. “She mentioned that she’d love to see some flowers in there and we finally got together and made it happen. I hope when residents visit City Hall and see that pop of color, it will put a smile on their faces.”
