Get ready, third graders!
THE 23RD DISTRICT COURT will host its fourth annual Law Day on May 1. The 2026 Law Day theme “The Rule of Law and the American Dream” encourages us to recognize the rule of law and how it ensures citizens have the right to live freely to pursue their dreams.
Students from the Taylor School District will be invited to the 23rd District Court to learn about the Constitution and the rights and freedoms it provides to every citizen.
The Taylor Police Department, Taylor Fire Department, Michigan State Police and several other state and federal agencies are participating in the event.
“As Americans it is crucial we understand the importance of the rule of law, our Constitution, and the rights the Constitution provides,” Chief Judge Victoria Shackelford said. “The rule of law means that everyone, regardless of who they are, must be treated fairly under the law. The rule of law and the rights granted to us in the Constitution allow us to pursue our dreams and goals.
“I am hopeful learning the importance of our Constitution will foster good citizenship in Taylor students that will guide them throughout life.”
During the event, displays and booths will be set up from various agencies such as the Taylor Police Department, Taylor Fire Department, Michigan State Police, Wayne County Sheriff’s Department, Drug Enforcement Agency, Detroit Metro SWAT Airport Police, Neighborhood Defenders Office, Wayne County Prosecutors Office, the Taylor Federation of Teachers, Corewell Health and more.
“We are all very excited at the court about this year’s Law Day celebration,” Judge Shackelford continued. “The theme of the rule of law, the Constitution, and the American Dream will run throughout the students’ day at the courthouse. The students will also engage in activities that enforce these themes.”
"The theme of this year's Law Day is essential to what makes our country great,” said Michael Wegher, Taylor School District Superintendent. “It is important for everyone to understand the rule of law, and that everyone is equal under the law. From the founding of our nation through the many crises that we have faced, the rule of law is a right that many have fought not just to maintain, but to expand to all.
“I am excited to again see that through our continued partnership with Judge Shackelford and the 23rd District Court, that we can instill in our students the importance of the rule of law and how it is essential to all American citizens.”
The event will be held at the courthouse and be open to all third graders. Judge Shackelford hopes to continue Law Day into the future and believes the judicial system should play a role in encouraging young people to be good citizens who participate in their democracy.
