In 2021, while Taylor was competing for Samsung’s new semiconductor fab, Samsung asked a simple question:

“What do Taylor and Williamson County need from us?”

Before that meeting, County Judge Bill Gravell had already pitched me his idea for our response. He wanted Samsung to commit to providing 24 summer internships for Taylor ISD students every year for the duration of any incentive agreement.

Samsung said yes.

On Friday, I attended the graduation ceremony for the fifth class of Samsung interns.

Standing with me were County Commissioner Russ Boles, former Mayor Pro Tem Gerald T. Anderson, and former City Council Member Mitch Drummond—each of whom played an important role in bringing Samsung to Taylor.

When we began pursuing Samsung, we talked often about investment, jobs, infrastructure, and tax base. Those things matter.

But Friday was a reminder that transformational projects can also be measured by the opportunities they create for our young people.

Perhaps the most enduring part of a $44 billion investment isn’t what makes the headlines. It’s the opportunity that changes the trajectory of a young person’s life.

One of the things I always hoped for Taylor was more reasons to come downtown and have fun.

A brand-new monthly comedy show selling out before its first performance is a good sign. It says something about the appetite for live entertainment and about the energy building downtown.

If you’re looking to catch some of the best talent on the Austin comedy scene without the drive, Dare Buzzard might be the thing for you.
