Meet Grace and Sam, the "Pets of the Week" at Alexander County Animal Services!

Grace is a 4-month-old female Labrador Retriever mix who weighs 18 pounds. She's a friendly girl who enjoys spending time with people and is always ready to brighten your day with her sweet personality. She loves a good play session, but once she's had her fun, she's more than happy to settle down for some cuddles and relaxation. Affectionate and easy to please, Grace is the perfect combination of playful and laid-back.

Sam is a 2-year-old male Domestic Shorthair mix who weighs 10 pounds. This sweet boy is friendly, loving, and always ready to make new friends. Whether he's soaking up attention from his favorite people or entertaining himself with playtime, Sam knows how to make every day a little brighter. A true people pleaser, Sam thrives on companionship and enjoys being part of the action. He loves affection, welcomes pets and cuddles, and is always happy to spend time with his humans.

The adoption fee is only $75, and includes first vaccinations, a microchip, and spay/neuter.

Visitors to Rocky Face Mountain Recreational Area can now enjoy an even better mountaintop experience thanks to newly installed mountain overlook signs that identify many of the prominent peaks visible from the park’s scenic overlooks. The signs help visitors connect the breathtaking panoramic views with the mountains and landmarks that stretch across the western North Carolina landscape.

The NC Department of Health and Human Services has issued a "Heat Health Alert" for July 16 in Alexander County with a maximum heat index of 100 degrees.

Heat of this magnitude can be dangerous to your health, particularly for people who are more exposed to extreme heat or more sensitive to extreme heat. This includes:
• People without access to air conditioning
• People working or exercising outdoors
• Older adults
• Pregnant women
• People with disabilities
• People with underlying health conditions

To prevent heat-related illness:
• Drink plenty of fluids
• Avoid caffeinated, sugary, or alcoholic drinks
• Reduce outdoor activities
• Stay in air conditioning as much as possible
• Watch for symptoms of heat-related illness
• Stay informed

📢💧 Water Outage Notice – Bethlehem Community 📢💧

A water outage has occurred in the Bethlehem community, affecting N.C. Highway 127 from Swayngims Lane to the Bethlehem Shopping Center.

City of Hickory crews are on the scene making repairs, and water service is expected to be restored within the next five hours.

We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience as crews work to restore service as quickly as possible.

Have you heard about the "Connect Church" program through the NC Rural Center?

Are you a member of a church that might be interested in creating a new missional engagement project? The Connect Church program is accepting applications for its 2027 cohort now through July 31.

Connect Church is a year-long coaching program that helps churches discover their unique assets and create a project that addresses current community needs. Upon program completion, churches can apply for a grant of up to $10,000 to launch their new initiative. These grants, worth $25,000 in coaching and resources, are available for free thanks to generous funding from Rural Center partners.

The Rural Center team has guided over 100 churches and faith groups through the Connect Church curriculum, and applications are now being accepted for the next program cohort.
