Downed aircraft

The Sevier County Sheriff’s Office and Search and Rescue responded to the 3 Creeks Reservoir area for a downed fire fighting aircraft. The aircraft is a helicopter. At this time fire conditions do not allow access to the scene. We are coordinating with the fire incident command to determine when it is safe to go in. This is an ongoing investigation. We are working closely with agencies having jurisdiction over aircraft and aircraft accidents. Please see the statement from the Fishlake Office of the US Forest service.

Our hearts are with the Provo Fire and Rescue today after the loss of Captain Spencer Long and his family. We are thinking of his friends, family, and colleagues and stand with them during this difficult time.

ONE MORE TIME FOR DA PEOPLE IN DA BACK: Utah’s outdoor spaces are worth protecting.

As visitation to Utah’s parks, trails, waterways, and public lands continues to grow, so do the challenges that come with it. Increased search and rescue calls, visitor safety needs, emergency response demands, and pressure on local communities are real impacts that many recreation destinations face.

That’s why we’re proud to launch the Outdoor Recreation Mitigation Grant—a new funding opportunity designed to help eligible counties address the direct impacts of outdoor recreation and tourism. The program will support projects that improve visitor safety, strengthen emergency response capabilities, and help communities manage growing recreation demand.

Outdoor recreation is a cornerstone of Utah’s economy and quality of life, but preserving the places we love requires more than simply enjoying them. It takes planning, investment, and a commitment to ensuring these landscapes remain healthy, accessible, and resilient for future generations.

We convey our sincerest sympathies to the families, friends, and colleagues of the three firefighters who tragically lost their lives, as well as our thoughts to the two firefighters who were seriously injured. We are deeply thankful for their heroic service, unwavering courage, and ultimate sacrifice in protecting the people and the State of Utah. Our hearts go out to everyone touched by this devastating loss.

Within minutes, we received feedback from our rural EMS directors, who have been closely monitoring transport volumes and maintaining open communication with their hospital partners. This information is extremely valuable to share with leaders whose responsibility is to stay ahead of any incident. We appreciate having such exceptional individuals in place, who have been working tirelessly day and night. A special acknowledgement is extended to Central Utah Counties, who have been most severely impacted.
