Recognizing 20 years of service as a 911 dispatcher involves celebrating two decades of unwavering dedication, compassion, and reliability as the "first first responder". A 20-year milestone signifies a profound impact on the community, often acting as a steady, compassionate, and reliable voice during people's most critical moments.
Christian Shelby 911 would like to congratulate Mykal Fisher for 20 years behind the headset. She began her career at Christian County Sheriff's Office as a full time dispatcher on February 1st, 2006. For two decades, YOU have been that steady voice on the other end of the line.
And we want to thank you for your service!

🚨 FUN FACT: The very first 9-1-1 call ever made! 🚨

📅 February 16, 1968
📍 Haleyville, Alabama

The first official 9-1-1 call wasn’t an emergency at all!
It was placed by Alabama Speaker of the House Rankin Fite and answered by U.S. Congressman Tom Bevill—just to prove the system worked.

✨ A few cool facts:
• The call happened less than 1 year after 9-1-1 was chosen as the emergency number
• It was answered by a local police dispatcher
• Alabama beat the rest of the country to the punch
• Today, millions of life-saving calls are answered every year thanks to that moment

📞 From one simple test call to saving lives every single day—this is why dispatchers matter.
Behind every ring is a calm voice, a quick mind, and someone ready to help.

💛 Thank a dispatcher today.

⚠️Dangerously Cold Temperatures This Weekend

As extreme cold moves into our area, it’s important to know the difference between hypothermia and frostbite, both are serious and can be life-threatening. Both conditions can happen quickly, especially with wind, wet clothing, or prolonged exposure outdoors, even at temperatures above freezing.

The Health Department has warming kits available in their micro pantry, accessible 24/7 for anyone who needs them.

Please take precautions:
Limit time outdoors
Dress in layers and keep skin covered
Check on neighbors, older adults, and those without reliable heat
Stay safe and stay warm this weekend.

❄️ Carbon Monoxide Safety During Cold Weather ❄️

As temperatures drop, homes are sealed tighter and heating systems work harder making carbon monoxide (CO) safety more important than ever.

⚠️ Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can be deadly if it builds up indoors.

✅ Stay safe this cold season:
• Have furnaces, fireplaces, and fuel-burning appliances inspected annually
• Never use ovens, grills, or portable fuel-burning heaters to heat your home
• Keep vents, chimneys, and flues clear of snow and debris
• Never run vehicles or generators in garages or near doors and windows
• Install CO alarms on every level of your home and near sleeping areas

🚨 If a CO alarm sounds or you experience symptoms like headache, dizziness, or nausea—get outside to fresh air immediately and call 911.

Warm homes save comfort. CO-safe homes save lives.
