Most leaders treat values as a thinking exercise.

They sit down, make a list, and choose words like "integrity," "courage," or "service." But here's what often gets missed โ€” your real values aren't found in your head. They live in your body.

Without body awareness, most of us end up identifying the values we think we're supposed to have. The ones that sound right. The ones that look good on a leadership framework. But they don't always reflect what's actually driving us.

Embodied leadership changes that. When you slow down, get out of your head, and become present in your body, you start to sense what truly moves you โ€” not what you think should move you.

Burnout can occur due to a "misfit of your skills".

This happens when the skills a person cares about and is good at are not used effectively, which can be draining. Recognizing this problem is important, as the solution may not require switching industries entirely. Instead, finding a way to fit those skills more appropriately can make work feel "filling rather than draining.

Most leaders think better listening means staying quiet.

But true empathy starts in your body, not just your mind.

When you're fully present physically โ€” relaxed posture, open chest, genuine eye contact โ€” the person across from you feels it. You're not just hearing their words. You're receiving them.

This is the core of embodied listening, and it's a skill you can actually train.

Through repeated practice, these adjustments stop feeling deliberate and become natural habits. You begin to show up open and empathetic by default, not just by effort.

Virtual meetings can sometimes feel disconnected, but with a few simple practices, you can stay grounded, present, and truly connect with others on the screen.

Hereโ€™s how to prepare:
โœ… Move Your Body: Take a quick walk or stretch your biggest muscle groups (like your hamstrings) before sitting down.
โœ… Breathe & Align: Take deep breaths, relax your spine, and feel grounded in the moment.
โœ… Clear Distractions: Silence your phone and focus on being fully present.

During the meeting:
๐Ÿค Expand Your Awareness: Notice the other personโ€™s posture, expressions, and energy.
๐Ÿ‘‚ Actively Listen: Use nods, gestures, and expressions to show youโ€™re engaged.
๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Check In: Ask questions like, โ€œHow are you feeling?โ€ or โ€œIs this still landing with you?โ€

โœจ Bonus Tips: Use headphones to block out noise and take short breaks to stay refreshed during long sessions.

By connecting with your body, the moment, and the people on the other side of the screen, youโ€™ll create more meaningful and productive virtual meetings. ๐ŸŒŸ

Today, we pause to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

Memorial Day serves as a powerful reminder of ultimate sacrifice. True leadership often means putting others first, and these heroes set the highest standard of that dedication. At East Valley Leader Lab, we hold deep gratitude for their courage. We also keep their families in our thoughts as our community reflects on their lasting impact.

May we all take time today to remember, reflect, and appreciate the freedoms we share.

Your team hears your stress before they process your words.

Anxiety naturally triggers shallow breathing. When pressure rises, you often end up speaking from high in your throat. People instantly recognize this tight, rushed vocal rhythm as panic, no matter how carefully you choose your words.

To communicate with true impact, you must connect your voice to your physical body. Your vocal tone, pace, and rhythm rely entirely on how you manage physical tension.

The most effective leadership adjustment is surprisingly simple. Taking a few deep, grounded breaths pulls your voice out of your throat and back down into your chest. This embodied practice achieves two vital things at once: it calms your internal nervous system and projects steady, reliable calmness to everyone in the room.

Take three slow breaths before you speak in your next difficult meeting. Notice how a relaxed body completely changes the weight and delivery of your message.

๐Ÿ“ฒ Save this post as a quick reminder to check your breathing before your next high-stakes conversation.
