“Go get coffee now!”
I was surprised when this thought popped into my mind today after finishing breakfast and a latte at my favorite restaurant.
Today I listened.
I wasn’t expecting my drive-thru coffee experience to turn into an unexpected hope-in-a-moment happening.
While waiting for my drink at the window, an unsuspecting man from the car behind me rushed up to the window and insisted on paying for it.
“I have to do this!” he said tearfully. “You have no idea how your license plate gave me hope today when I needed it.”
Still startled from his surprise appearance and act of kindness, I thanked him and told him I had already paid. Then he handed me cash and insisted I keep it and pay it forward to someone else.
Still reeling from my blend of emotions, I drove to a nearby parking space, got out of my van, and took a deep breath. Moments later the car with the man (and his female companion) parked near me and they asked if I was ok.
I nodded, walked to their car, reached out my hand and introduced myself. Still emotional, the man grasped my hand tightly and thanked me again. The women smiled and nodded.
“How can I pray for you or offer you hope today?” I asked.
“You already have,” they said.
I hope my story encourages you to listen and respond to God’s promptings to act. People in need of hope are everywhere and you may be surprised how an ordinary moment, outing, act of kindness or even words on a license plate can be transformed into an extraordinary holy happening.
I’d love to hear your “hope-in-a-moment” stories.
