13th Annual Juneteenth Celebration
Sat., June 20 | 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

The African-American Advisory Committee presents the 13th Annual Juneteenth Celebration to educate the community and celebrate freedom from enslavement in the United States.

The celebration will be held at Tempe History Museum, 809 E Southern Avenue, Tempe, 85282. This free, family-friendly event will include hands-on activities, performances, vendors, story time, a video game trailer, Police and Fire vehicles, food truck vendor and more!

Thank you to Councilmembers Amberg and Chin for working with me on the very important issue of Community Engagement & Connection. I also appreciate the stakeholders on the subcommittee who dedicated their time on this project: Neighborhood Commissioners Suri Wall and Lane Carraway; MYAC members Braden Casteneda and Grace Wambacher; Human Relations Commissioner, Candyce Lindsay: Residents Julie Kent and Franklin Zyriek; and ASU Professor, Dr. Elisa Kawam.

I appreciate all the community members who participated in our focus groups and online survey. The feedback you gave us contributed to our recommendations to build stronger community relationships, increase community trust and civic particpation and health.

Recommendations:
1. Create a civic engagement academy to inform residents about how the city works and consider a high school module to educate students in partnership with the Tempe Union High School District.

2. Focus on streamlining training and meeting standards for Boards and Commissions to include pathways to increasing their involvement with advising and informing City Council on city policy and budget decisions.

3. Empower the Neighborhood Advisory Commission (NAC) to act as liaisons with Neighborhood Associations and Home Owners Associations (HOA) to facilitate discussions and elicit feedback on community issues and concerns to be shared with City Council; and for the NAC to update and hold the master Neighborhood Association and HOA Directory.

4. Elevate community correspondence to strengthen the perceptions of being heard by City Council and City Staff on issues and concerns affecting city residents.

5. Enhance the community feedback loop to ensure residents understand how their input was used in shaping city decisions on policy, programs, and projects.

6. Develop a multi-family residential complex outreach program that informs renters on city business and educates them on how to engage with the city.

7. Consider new technology platforms that improve community engagement and communications; and examine ways to improve accessibility and search tools on existing digital platforms.

Thank you to all the community members who served on the Tempe Age-Friendly Council Subcommittee and the Age-Friendly Action Team. I also want to thank Councilmembers Amberg and Keating for joining me on this important project. Over the past several months everyone worked hard to develop the plan with community input that's designed to enhance the quality of life for older Tempe residents. I've very pleased that we will maintain our AARP Livability certification. I'm also enthused about the plan's updates that includes the first ever Dementia-Friendly Park in Arizona. www.tempe.gov/agefriendly

Thank you Maricopa County Emergency Management for an informative discussion with members of For Our City Tempe. We learned about the program, Community Organizations Active in Disaster (COAD) that was a great resource to our community during last year’s microburst, and a new opportunity to be involved with in case of emergency.

For Our City Tempe is a community-led collaborative focused on making a difference in the lives of Tempe residents. It’s open to all residents, faith, business and nonprofit organizations.

Take the survey. Improve your city.

Now’s your chance to tell the City of Tempe what you think about transportation, parks, safety and city services and programs. The 2026 Community Survey is now open!

Each summer, a large group of Tempe households are chosen at random by the city’s third party, professional survey conductor; they are mailed a hardcopy survey to fill out and return. If you receive one, please fill it out. Your survey responses are never made known to the city by name – only the aggregate results are provided.

If you didn’t receive a survey in the mail, please take it online now. Survey closes July 30.

Your feedback makes a real difference. The results help the city determine community priorities and identify ways to better serve you.

Our city plays a major role in the region’s growth as a hub for aerospace development and manufacturing. Honeywell Aerospace’s presence is an economic driver in our community for jobs and investment.
