Yesterday, we had the pleasure of welcoming students from CE Cole Intermediate School as part of their interactive community walking tour. Students had the opportunity to meet their local firefighters, ask questions about the fire service, and get an up-close look at some of the life saving equipment we use every day. Thanks for stopping by!

This morning around 5:45am, the MTFR was dispatched to Route 222 South in the area of the Route 61 South on-ramp in Muhlenberg Township for a motor vehicle accident with entrapment. While responding, Berks DES advised that two occupants were trapped inside a sedan after it struck a tractor trailer.

MTFR personnel arrived to find the sedan lodged sideways underneath the trailer, positioned in front of the rear trailer axles, with both front-seat occupants heavily entrapped. Crews immediately began working to access the patients, utilizing the limited space beneath the trailer to initiate extrication efforts. Personnel were able to remove the driver’s side doors, allowing both patients to be extricated within approximately 12 minutes of arrival. Both occupants were transported to area hospitals with minor injuries.

A rotator from V&M Towing was initially requested to assist with lifting the trailer during the extrication process, however crews were able to successfully complete the extrication without the need for the additional resource. Emergency personnel remained on scene for a little over an hour while the vehicles were removed and the roadway was reopened.

Today, MTFR personnel traveled to Pierce Manufacturing in Bradenton, Florida to begin the final inspection process for our new engine.

Engine 66 was ordered in the spring of 2025 as part of a quick-delivery program and was partially funded through an LSA Statewide Grant. The new engine will feature a 2,000 GPM pump, 750-gallon water tank, low hosebed design, Whelen emergency lighting, FireTech HiViz scene lighting, a short overall wheelbase/length for improved maneuverability, and seating for six firefighters.

Engine 66 is expected to be delivered within the next month and will then undergo additional pre-delivery inspections, decal installation, and equipment/tool mounting. The engine is currently projected to be placed into service in late summer 2026.

As we reflect on the tragic events that occurred this past weekend close to home, our thoughts remain with the members of the Walnuttown Fire Company and their families.

Fire Chief Jeff Buck and Assistant Chief Robert Shick were killed in the line of duty while operating on a search detail for a missing person, after the UTV they were operating was struck by a vehicle.

Over the past two days, MTFR personnel have paid their respects as they were transported to and from the Lehigh County Forensic Unit.

Rest in peace.

Early this morning around 2am, the MTFR was dispatched to the area of Route 222 southbound at the Route 61 northbound exit ramp for a motor vehicle accident with entrapment involving a tractor trailer.

Units arrived to find a tractor trailer that had left the roadway, struck a concrete barrier, and overturned. The impact caused the dry bulk trailer to rupture, spilling a portion of its cement load onto the roadway. MTFR crews worked for approximately 15 minutes to safely extricate the driver from the cab.

The roadway remained closed for nearly six hours while the tractor trailer was removed by the tow company and the roadway was cleared by PennDOT.
