🎶“Looks like we made it”🎶 through the frigid temperatures! Levels in the tanks are actually gaining at night! Thank you to everyone who conserved water for the past two weeks. There are still so many water utilities throughout the state that are struggling with water outages, low pressure, system and customer leaks. Thankfully, our system was able to maintain adequate levels!

Unless your plumbing isn’t properly insulated
(hopefully this isn’t the case), there is no need to drip your faucets. 32 degrees is “freezing” but not for insulated pipes. It’s suggested to drip faucets when the temperature is consistently BELOW 25 degrees.

Enjoy the upcoming warm weather!

PSA FOR CITY OF TENNESSEE RIDGE UTILITY CUSTOMERS:
The following post is to hopefully answer some questions that you may have concerning the Tennessee Ridge Water System.
1. COTR purchases water from COE (City of Erin)in emergency situations ONLY. We are not dependent on COE water system. Your water source is supplied by wells. Our water supply is NOT affected if COE is experiencing water supply issues.
2. The new well will be in operation by September 2026. The purpose of the additional water source is to prevent outages within the system and to be completely independent from COE. The goal is to be able to maintain the system in all situations.
3. The new well project is funded by ARP grant.
4. The 2 Infrastructure Planning Grants that COTR received allows flow meters to be installed throughout the system. The flow meters are capable of detecting higher than normal usage within a certain area and will send an alarm to the Public Works Department.
This allows customer leaks and system leaks to be detected quickly so tank levels are not affected.
5. Tennessee Ridge water system is a rural system. We will face different challenges than larger systems. There are approximately 1256 active customers on the system. The expenses to maintain the system are funded completely by revenue generated from the utility bills.
6. All improvements to the system must be depreciated and shown in the budget as an operating expense. Meaning, even though actual funds ($$$) are not being used, depreciation is deducted from revenue as an expense and affects the net position.
7. The approximate cost to add a pumping system at Danville is 20 million dollars. 1256 customers cannot fund such an expensive project. Administrators researched the project 15 years ago and the approximate cost was 10 million dollars. Again, customers would not be able to afford to fund such a project even with a grant.
8. Grants are not “free” money. There is usually a match that is required and depreciation from any project must show as an expense.
9. Houston County can apply for utility grants for municipalities and cover the match portion. Depreciation will still remain as an expense for the municipality and funded by utility bills.
10. Grants are not easy to obtain. Certain criteria must be met. Customers family income plays a vital role in receiving a CDBG grant (must be below the median family income) along with how many customers will utilize the improvements. Rural areas normally don’t meet the criteria due to the distance between meters.
11. COTR was mandated by the Tennessee Board of Utility Regulation to conduct a Water Rate Study that determines utility rates.
12. COTR strives to be transparent and accountable to citizens as well as all utility customers. Please contact the Tennessee Ridge City Hall with concerns or questions and not social media. Stay informed by the correct source!
