Otter Creek Fire Department

Otter Creek Fire Department The Otter Creek Fire Department is organized to save lives and protect property. Originally, this township had three separate fire departments.

We are dedicated to protecting the citizens of our township and providing professional and exemplary services. Otter Creek Township is located 75 miles west of Indianapolis along US-41 in northern Vigo County. However, in 2011, the three local departments were joined together as one to form Otter Creek Fire Department for more efficient protection of the township's residents. OCFD provide Fire, Rescue and First Responder Medical protection to nearly 10,000 residents and 36 square miles

The thoughts and prayers of the Otter Creek Fire Department are with our Trans-Care family 🤍

Released with Permission from the family.

Some stories remind us exactly why what we do matters.

This week, one of our paramedics / EMS Instructors was on vacation with her family when the unthinkable happened — her husband, a local Vigo County Firefighter, suddenly suffered a cardiac arrest in the middle of the night.

Without hesitation, she immediately began CPR and continued life-saving efforts for approximately 10 minutes until first responders arrived. Fire crews continued care, followed by advanced life support and transport for definitive treatment.

Today, because of early recognition, immediate CPR, rapid emergency response, and early ALS intervention — he is alive.

Moments like this reinforce a message we share every day: early CPR saves lives.

This event also left a lasting impression on their children. One of their children was already CPR certified and witnessed firsthand how those skills matter. Now, their other two children have asked to become CPR certified as well — turning a traumatic moment into a powerful reminder that anyone can be prepared to save a life.

We are incredibly proud of our paramedic for staying calm under unimaginable circumstances and for putting her training into action when her family needed her most.

Please continue to keep this family in your thoughts as they focus on recovery and healing.

Take time to hug your loved ones a little tighter — tomorrow is never promised. And if you’ve been thinking about learning CPR, let this be your reminder: your hands could save someone you love.

(Update) We can now make this 11 fires for our department and another 4 in vigo county alone since this post was made!

To the citizens of Otter Creek Township, we are glad you are out enjoying this wonderful weather we are having! However we would like to take a second to remind everyone that fire doesn’t always behave the way we would like or expect and can quickly get out of hand. Our department has responded to 9 such brush fires in the past two days along with other county departments that have also responded to dozens. Please take into consideration the windy conditions, dry ground and how quickly an unattended fire can spread. Please be safe and enjoy the outdoors responsibly!

🚲🚸 Safety Reminder from the Indiana State Police 🚸🚲
The Indiana State Police reminds motorists to stay alert for bicyclists and pedestrians—especially children. As warmer weather arrives, more people are walking and riding bikes to save fuel, get exercise, and just enjoy being outside.
Children are also more likely to be walking or biking to and from school this time of year, so extra caution is critical in neighborhoods, residential areas, and school zones.
đźš— Safety Tips for Drivers:
• Bicycles have the same rights and responsibilities on the road as vehicles
• Slow down in residential areas, near playgrounds, and schools
• Watch for signs that children may be nearby
• Scan between parked cars for children who may dart into the street
• Remember: children are impulsive and don’t always think about safety
• Kids have difficulty judging vehicle speed and distance
• Be patient with bicyclists—wait until it’s safe to pass
• Give bicyclists space and follow at a safe distance
• Use extra caution at night and during wet conditions
đźš´ Safety Tips for Bicyclists:
• Wear a properly fitted helmet every ride
• Perform the ABC Quick Check before riding:
Air – check tire pressure
Brakes – make sure they work
Chain – ensure it’s tight and oiled
• Follow the rules of the road and ride with traffic
• Be visible: wear bright clothing during the day and reflective gear at night
• Stay alert and aware of your surroundings
Let’s all do our part to keep our community safe. A few extra seconds of caution can prevent a lifetime of regret. ❤️🚒
