🚒 What Is a Junior Corps Firefighter?
Have you ever wondered what it takes to become a firefighter? For young people interested in the fire service, the Junior Corps Firefighter Program is where that journey can begin.
Junior Corps Firefighters are young members, typically between the ages of 13-18, who learn about the fire service through hands-on training, instruction from certified firefighters and instructors, and real-world experience. Under proper supervision and within established safety guidelines, Junior Corps members can respond to emergencies and assist with exterior firefighting operations, including:
• Throwing and positioning ladders
• Operating hose lines from exterior positions
• Establishing hydrant connections and water supplies
• Learning proper use of firefighting tools and equipment
• Assisting with scene support and other exterior operations
• Developing an understanding of fireground safety, teamwork, communication, and accountability
The Junior Corps isn’t just about learning how to use the equipment. Members develop discipline, responsibility, teamwork, leadership, and a commitment to serving their community.
For those interested in pursuing the fire service, the program provides a strong foundation and a pathway toward becoming a trained and certified firefighter when they become eligible.
🔥 Training Through Real-World Experience
This past Sunday, our Junior Corps Firefighters joined certified firefighters to assist a local homeowner with a brush pile that had grown too large to be safely disposed of without assistance.
What started as an opportunity to help a member of our community also became a valuable hands-on training exercise for our Junior Corps.
Working alongside experienced firefighters, Junior Corps members were able to practice brush fire management and mitigation, while gaining experience with the tactics, equipment, hose operations, safety considerations, and teamwork required during these types of incidents.
Opportunities like this are an important part of the Junior Corps experience. Training in a controlled environment under the supervision of certified firefighters helps prepare our junior members for the responsibilities they’ll take on as future firefighters.
