www.advancehousing.org Advance Housing, Inc., a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO) is a provider of supportive housing services to mentally ill and homeless individuals living in Bergen and Sussex County, New Jersey. The agency opened in 1997 as a consortium of providers, and includes on its Board representation from local nonprofit organizations such as, The Arc

of Bergen and Passaic Counties, Care Plus, Comprehensive Behavioral Healthcare, Friendship House and Vantage Health System. Advance Housing, Inc. also qualified to become a CHDO through low income and consumer representation on its Board. The agency has become instrumental in meeting the residential needs of consumers of mental health services, and looks forward to continuing its efforts in this area. The agency’s philosophy of “making the program fit the consumer” in its delivery of supportive housing services has enabled consumers with various needs to live independently in the community. Services are provided via multi-disciplinary teams that utilize flexible, innovative approaches and work closely with other local providers in order to ensure collaborative service planning with consumers. A unique feature of the agency is its ability to develop, own and operate a growing supply of decent, affordable housing. Housing is such a crucial element to a person’s ability to succeed in the community, yet it’s nearly impossible for consumers to find affordable housing anywhere. As a result, Advance Housing, Inc. has taken a proactive approach when it comes to housing, and has developed its own supply of affordable housing. Consumers often report satisfaction associated with having a supportive landlord and find that the agency’s housing is of better quality than they could rent in the private market. Often times, the property management staff works very closely with the consumers to: develop payment plans for missed rents, to ensure high quality housing by maintaining the operations of the housing, and to ensure that the consumer stays housed until they decide they want to move on or leave.

Advance Housing's programs are geared toward helping people with disabilities live independently in the community. Here is a brief description of each of the agency's current programs:

Aging out Youth Program: The Aging Out Youth Program provides permanent supportive housing services to youth aging out of the Department of Children and Family services and transitioning to the adult mental health system. Consumers will work closely with a Youth Transition Specialist and a multidisciplinary team to ensure normalized living arrangements coupled with individualized services. Staff members provide a flexible and responsive system of support that allows consumers to maintain independence and a lifestyle of their choosing.

The Homeless Service Team (HoST): This program uses a holistic approach to help homeless adults with psychiatric disabilities achieve a better quality of life. The HoST team uses the Housing First model to move people from the streets and shelters to the safety of their own homes. The staff are accessible 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Supportive Living Program: This program is geared toward people who are transitioning from group homes or lengthy hospitalizations and have achieved a relative level of independent living skills. A limited supply of scatter-site, agency-owned housing is available for this program.

Advance Consumer Choice and Empowerment Program (ACCEP): This program is an option to group home placement for people ready for discharge from Greystone Park Psychiatric hospital who are choosing to live in more independent situations. Services are provided by a residential intensive support team capable of meeting the consumers' needs in the community 24 hours a day.

Special Case Management: This program provides case management services to individuals on a fee for service basis who are not typically eligible for the agency's other programs. Services can include case management, consulting, and managing Special Needs Trusts.
