We have fielded several calls today regarding tornado shelters:

Our shelters encompass campus classrooms and as such are not accessible from the outside and just open to the public.

However, we have, and will continue to consult with the Liberty Eylau Fire Department as tonight's weather approaches. If they feel there is an imminent threat developing LEISD administrators will go and open the Liberty-Eylau Elementary building to the public.

IF WE DO, THAT INFORMATION WILL BE POSTED HERE.

The forecast for Friday, January 10 has been updated. A Moderate Risk has been issued for the ArkLaTex and portions of northwestern Louisiana. The Moderate Risk area highlights the area with strong potential for damaging wind gusts. Large hail and tornadoes will also be possible. Overall, severe weather, some of which could be significant, is possible across a broad region--from roughly the I-35 corridor to the I-55 corridor and as far north as southern portions of Missouri. Please stay tuned to your local forecast offices and broadcast media for other updates as well.

****ACTION NEEDED TO SAVE YOUR LIFE****

One of the first things, and one of the most important things, you’ll be asked when you call 911 is: “What’s the address of the emergency?”

There’s a big problem though if you’re depending on EMS, fire, or police to find your home with mailboxes looking like this and nothing else to easily identify the street number on your house.

All four of these images were taken in our service areas.

Here are some good guidelines to follow to ensure first responders from any agency can find you during an emergency:

1. Numbers must be visible from the street.

2. Numbers should be at least 5 inches high.*

3. Numbers should be placed on a contrasting background, with a reflective coating on the numbers for easy visibility at night.

4. Repair or replace aging address number placards, especially on mailboxes that are a distance from the front of your residence.

5. Prune any bushes, tree limbs, or other growth that has covered your house numbers.

6. Numbers should be placed on or beside the front door. If your door is not easily seen from the street, or if you live in an area where mailboxes are clustered, put the numbers on a post, fence, or tree at the driveway entrance so they can be clearly seen from the street.

7. In addition to numbers on the front door of your house, if you have a rural-style mailbox, reflective and contrasting numbers should be placed on both sides of the box so they can be seen by an emergency vehicle approaching from either direction.

*Note: Some cities and counties have sign ordinances with specific height requirements. Contact your city or county officials for specific height requirements related to guidelines for posting emergency 911 address numbers.

** The Corps of Engineers of Wright Patman Lake will be conducting a prescribed fire today ( control burn ). This will be mainly on the Cass County side around the Sulfur River Bridge, but smoke will drift over into Bowie County. **
