Yesterday, BG Darren L. Werner, commanding general of the U.S. Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command, toured Red River Army Depot. This was Werner’s first visit since taking command in June.

“While we are dealing with a global pandemic, you (Red River) are maintaining a consistent pace, a consistent drum beat and consistently delivering the needs of the Army,” Werner said. “You should be very proud of that.”

During the day, the general toured several depot facilities including: the new tire facility, the Heavy Tactical production area, the Bradley Fighting Vehicle production area, the wiring harness repair facility and the Rubber Products Division. Werner also visited a storage facility at the DLA Defense Distribution-Red River.

Werner was accompanied by Command SGM Jerry M. Charles, Wendy Saigh, chief counsel and Michael Szajenko, deputy chief counsel.

Before departing the depot, Werner held two listening sessions with various Team Red River employees and thanked several team members by presenting a commanding general coin.

The Suicide Prevention 2020 slogan is “Connect to Protect” to emphasize the important role we all play in taking care of one another.

Today, we honor our nation’s heroes during the 75th commemoration of the end of World War II. On this day, formal surrender documents were signed aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay signifying Victory over Japan Day (V-J Day).

Let’s take a look back at a few photos from 1945 at the Red River Ordnance Depot.

Sometimes you can see a photo and remember exactly what you were doing or it brings back your favorite memory.

On Thursdays, we like to think that we help take you back to remembering a good time or maybe seeing a familiar face.

Today’s #ThrowbackThursday takes us back to 1991 once again!

And here we go!

Stay safe #TeamRedRiver!

Batten down the hatches!!! We are going to be in for a tough day tomorrow as the remnants of Hurricane Laura move through our area. Take action now to protect yourself, your family, and your property.

Texarkana is under a Tropical Storm Warning through all of Thursday. (Who would have thought we would see something like that around here?) At this point, the National Weather Service is forecasting winds of 20-30 mph - with the potential of some up to 57 mph. That could mean damage to some awnings and carports - and unsecured lightweight items being blown about. There's also a pretty good chance that some tree limbs will be broken or the trees themselves will be completely uprooted and blown over.

There is also a Flash Flood Watch in effect until 7:00 on Friday morning. If Laura passes us to the east as expected, we will likely not see as much rain and wind as we would if we were on the right side of the storm. However, we are still expecting 3 - 6 inches of rain - with higher amounts possible in some places. It goes without saying that you should keep a close watch on things if you live in an area that's prone to flood. Chances are pretty good that some flooding will happen with this storm so make your emergency plans now - or better yet, you might want to make arrangements to stay somewhere with higher ground.

And on top of everything else... There is the potential of isolated tornadoes developing with this storm.

We know that we say this every time we are expecting a lot of rain and flooding, but there's always some that don't listen - and we wind up having to come rescue them. Don't be that guy... Do NOT try to drive through flooded streets!! Turn around and find another way to get wherever you're going. Actually, the best plan is to not even be out in it unless you absolutely have to be.

If you haven't already, right now might be the perfect time to register for the CodeRED Emergency Notification System to get critical weather alerts on your phone within seconds of them being issued by the National Weather Service. It's completely free for any resident of Texarkana (Texas and Arkansas), Bowie County, and Miller County. Just follow the link at www.txkusa.org to register online. It only takes about two minutes to do.

You guys be safe!

08/13/2020

Did you know that 116 families were once owners of the land that Red River Army Depot currently occupies? On July 28, 1941, a civil action was filed by W.D. McFarlane, Special Assistant to the Attorney General, ordering that the government be immediately granted possession of the land. To ease the plight of those who had no place to live, the Farm Security Administration constructed 200 temporary, pre-fabricated homes. The average price paid per acre based on government appraisal was $27.83.

There’s no doubt Red River has a deep history, but the depot's roots began well before the construction of the first government building. Take a look at a 1985 article discussing the residents who occupied the land before 1941. #RRADBirthday #SeventyNineYears #ThrowbackThursday
