Thank you to all who joined us for our Freeman-Custis Historical Marker Dedication Ceremony in Sheppard Park, 500 N Stateline Ave. This is believed to be the first and only historical marker in the country dedicated specifically to the expedition. 🗺📜
We were joined by the Texas Society of the United States Daughters of 1812, who donated the marker, and Dr. Dan Flores, whose book Southern Counterpart to Lewis and Clark: The Freeman and Custis Expedition of 1806, has helped bring renewed attention to the expedition’s significance.
This expedition was commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson 220 years ago following the Louisiana Purchase, and is significant to how we understand the history of the Red River, and our 4-states region.
Texarkana, TX Mayor Bob Bruggeman and Texarkana, AR Assistant Mayor Ulysses Brewer read a proclamation celebrating the momentous occasion and declaring May 15th as Freeman-Custis Red River Expedition Day. Our very own Planning & Project Management Coordinator and City Historian, Matt Solomon, was presented with the National Society United States Daughters of 1812 History Award for his dedication to preserving and promoting the history of North East Texas and the City of Texarkana.
