NYC Council Member Amanda Farias

NYC Council Member Amanda Farias This is the official page for NYC Council Member Amanda Farías representing District 18 in The Bronx A graduate of Preston High School and St.

Amanda Farías is the Council Member for the 18th District, representing parts of Castle Hill, Clason Point, Harding Park, Parkchester, Shorehaven, and Soundview. Amanda is a lifelong Bronxite, born and raised in Soundview as a second-generation Afro-Latina of Puerto Rican and Dominican descent. She is a proud product of local schools and community institutions. Growing up she attended P.S. 69X and

Holy Cross School, and spent after-school hours learning to dance and summers at camp in Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club. John’s University with a Bachelor of Arts in Government and Politics and Master of Arts in Public Administration, where her passion for community service, activism, and empowerment began. Soon after graduate school, she started her career by fighting voter suppression and mobilizing Black and Latino communities for President Barack Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign. Council Member Farías’ extensive experience includes working for the New York City Council from 2013 to 2017 in several different capacities, including Director of Special Projects, managing the Women’s Caucus and a districtwide Participatory Budgeting process. After her time in the Council, Amanda joined The Consortium for Worker Education as an Assistant Director in 2017, to manage workforce development programming in the Bronx. Amanda’s programming and partnerships with CUNY, labor unions, and local community-based organizations have allowed her to create new opportunities for young Bronxites to access trade jobs. During this time she also served as the New York State Coordinator for New American Leaders and as the Co-Founder of Women of Color for Progress. Through her work with these organizations, Amanda created a pipeline for more women to be elected to office through increased civic engagement and opportunities in electoral politics. During the height of the pandemic Amanda became active in mutual aid and feels most in her element when in community. Hosting food distributions for neighbors has been at the core of her service to continue the fight against food insecurity and The Bronx being the unhealthiest county in NYS. She was elected as the Council Member of the 18th district in 2021. Amanda currently resides in Parkchester with her dog and cat. Council Member Amanda Farías is the Chair of the Committee on Economic Development and the Co-Chair of the Women’s Caucus.

This , I introduced and advanced legislation to protect working-class New Yorkers on the job, expand access to early childhood education information, require stronger renewable energy planning, support small businesses facing rising commercial rents, and make city services easier for older adults to access without relying only on digital tools.

So much of this work comes from listening to the stakeholders, partners, advocates, and community leaders who are closest to these issues every day. When they bring these concerns forward, my responsibility is to help move them from conversation to action.

I was honored to receive the NYC Region NYSALAS Distinguished Leadership Award and join a panel discussion on Latine curriculum and the educational experiences of Latino students across New York City.

As a proud Latina who grew up in the Bronx, this conversation is personal. Every student deserves to see themselves reflected in what they learn, to understand the contributions their communities have made, and to know that their stories are worthy of being taught, celebrated, and remembered. When young people can connect their own experiences to what they see in the classroom, it strengthens their sense of belonging and helps them imagine what is possible for their future.

Thank you to NYSALAS NYC Region, Cynthia Jeffers, Dr. Ramon Gonzalez, and all of the educators, administrators, and advocates who continue to invest in the next generation. I am grateful for this recognition and for the opportunity to be part of such an important conversation. Congratulations to all of the evening’s honorees.

Today, the Office of Management & Budget, the New York State Comptroller, the Department of Finance, and the Independent Budget Office convened for one of the final hearings in the FY2027 Executive Budget process.

After months of hearing from agencies across the city, this moment matters. These are the conversations that help us look honestly at the city’s fiscal picture and continue pushing for a budget that is responsible, transparent, and grounded in the needs New Yorkers have raised throughout this process.

Tomorrow at 9:30 AM, the Council will hear public testimony on the FY2027 Executive Budget. New Yorkers can sign up to testify at council.nyc.gov/testify and make sure their priorities are part of the final budget conversation. Our Annual Community Skate Party is one of the ways my office brings free, family-friendly recreation to neighbors. For many kids in our community, this may be one of their first times rollerblading or skating. Sometimes all it takes is one new experience to open the door to a new activity they love, and I’m grateful my office can help make that possible for them.

Thank you to our partners at and for helping for helping bring this event to life and and providing the support and equipment so families had what they needed to get out there and skate. Giving our young people more ways to stay active, try something new, and have fun is always worth it.

We know how much our communities need opportunities to safely dispose of sensitive documents and protect themselves from identity theft. My office was proud to co-sponsor this event so that our neighbors can take advantage of this free resource and leave with one less thing to worry about. Thank you to .Core.FEC, and and for helping make this event possible.

This food distribution is exactly why we fight for these investments.

Through funding secured for Food Bank For New York City as well as additional resources I advocated for because CB9 is designated as a food desert, organizations on the ground are able to provide fresh, healthy food directly to our neighbors.

It was great to join CB9 and to lend a hand, and see these dollars at work supporting families across .

Access to nutritious food shouldn’t depend on your zip code, and we’re continuing to invest in solutions that help keep our communities fed, healthy, and thriving.

Life Together Works NYC has been a community staple in our district, making sure families have access to food, resources, and support.

Their food distribution work in has doubled every year since they started, and for a long time, they were doing all of that work without a proper refrigeration system. When they came to me for support, I knew this was an investment that would have a far-reaching impact.

I was glad to help secure $15,500 through Food Bank For NYC for a new refrigeration system to help them better serve the upwards of 800 people who line up in front of their organization every Thursday.
