Independence Day, July 4 will soon be upon us. Join the Grand Concourse Library staff as we discuss patriot Thomas Paine's incendiary pamphlet, "Common Sense." Prior to its publication in 1776, most colonists wanted to "reconcile" with Great Britain, and put their differences with the mother country behind them. Once the pamphlet was widely disseminated and read, popular sentiment shifted toward independence. Register for the discussion and read "Common Sense" by clicking the link below:

In 1945, fifty-two papyrus texts from the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD were discovered buried in an earthenware jar in the Egyptian desert. The texts included "The Gospel of Mary Magdalene" and "The Gospel of Judas." In her 1979 book, "The Gnostic Gospels,"
religious scholar, Elaine Pagels, claims that these texts and others were deliberately excluded from the New Testament canon. This was done, Pagels argues, to unify Christian belief and practice around the teachings of the Apostles and the established Church.
