RSS - Riverdale Senior Services

RSS - Riverdale Senior Services In 1974, RSS Founder Julia Blumenthal and her colleagues set out to improve the lives of seniors in the Riverdale community.

RSS (Riverdale Senior Services) is a multi-purpose non-profit agency whose mission is to promote the physical, intellectual, social, and emotional well-being of older adults in the Northwest Bronx. Riverdale Senior Center opened with the mission of providing a place where people could meet friends, share a meal and learn from one another. As we have grown, we’ve responded to the changing needs and

interests of the vital, diverse senior population of the Northwest Bronx. In addition to a daily delicious lunch, RSS now offers a full range of exercise, cultural, health management and social programs, as well as a wide array of social and behavioral health services. We continue to evolve to meet our members’ needs, and hope you will join us, at no cost, to sample all we have to offer!

The RSS Book Club Takes a Trip to 1789 Maine!

Today, 20 members of the RSS Book Club gathered to discuss our latest selection, The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon — a historical novel inspired by the remarkable life and diary of real-life midwife Martha Ballard.

Our conversation went beyond the pages as we explored the real Martha Ballard, compared fact with fiction, and followed a timeline connecting Martha’s life and diary to the novel and the present day.

And, of course, no book club meeting is complete without a little something to eat! We brought a taste of Maine to RSS with tea, maple leaf cookies, blueberries, and Dunkin’ Munchkins. 🫐🍁☕️

Celebrate health and community!

We presentation on Immunization Awareness led by Carlos Tejeda from Montefiore Medical Systems!

Carlos shared vital insights on how staying up-to-date on vaccines protects individual health and strengthens our entire community. He highlighted why preventative immunizations are especially critical for older adults, whose natural immune systems change over time, making protection against diseases like the flu, pneumonia, RSV, and shingles even more essential.

Thank you to Carlos Tejeda for taking the time to educate and empower us, and to everyone who attended and asked great questions!

Today, RSS recognized Women’s Equality Day with an afternoon of reflection, conversation, and learning.

More than 30 members participated in a thoughtful discussion about women’s equality, the progress that has been made, and the work that continues today.

Following the discussion, members gathered for a screening of On the Basis of S*x, a film inspired by the early career of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and her fight against gender discrimination.

Programs like this create space for our members to connect history with lived experience, share perspectives, and continue important conversations within our community.

A beautiful morning for movement, mindfulness, and community at RSS.

Our members took advantage of the sunshine with Tai Chi on the Terrace, enjoying gentle movement, balance, breathing, and time together against an incredible Bronx backdrop.

Programs like this are about more than staying active. They create opportunities to support physical wellness, reduce stress, build confidence, and stay socially connected — all while having a great time together.

This is what ageless living looks like at Riverdale Senior Services.

Today’s Tech Class at RSS focused on Password Management and helping our members feel more confident protecting themselves online.

During the session, members explored the importance of creating strong passwords, keeping accounts secure, avoiding unsafe password habits, and using practical strategies to make passwords easier to manage.

Technology changes quickly, but learning together makes it easier to stay informed, connected, and safe. We’re proud to provide hands-on opportunities that help our members strengthen their digital skills and use technology with greater confidence and independence.

Another great day of learning at Riverdale Senior Services – Center for Ageless Living.

Friday was extra special at RSS.

In honor of National Senior Citizens Day on August 21, our Center was filled with activity, connection, laughter, and community throughout the day.

Fresh vegetables and fruits were distributed to our members.

40 members joined us for Bingo on the Terrace, which was 15 more participants than our last Bingo event.

The day continued into the afternoon, with many members staying until after 3 PM for our Ice Cream Social.

Days like this are a wonderful reminder that RSS is about more than programs. It is about creating opportunities to gather, connect, enjoy new experiences, and build community together.

And the excitement is continuing. More than 50 members have already signed up for our End of Summer BBQ on September 4.

Thank you to our members and staff for making National Senior Citizens Day such a lively celebration. We look forward to many more days like this at RSS.
