When children can see clearly, they can learn confidently!
We're proud to share this post, that the Oregon Lions Sight & Hearing Foundation reached an incredible milestone last week, screening their 200,000th student during this school year!

As Lions, we know that healthy vision plays a critical role in a child's ability to learn, grow, and succeed in the classroom. When vision problems are identified early, children have a better opportunity to reach their full potential.

Our club is honored to be part of this important effort in our local schools. This year, our volunteers helped screen more than 1,600 students throughout our county, ensuring that children who may need follow-up care can be identified as early as possible.

Thank you to the dedicated volunteers, school staff, parents, and the Oregon Lions Sight & Hearing Foundation who make this program possible. Together, we're helping children see a brighter futureβ€”one screening at a time.

200,000 students screened! 🦁

On Tuesday, May 26, 2026, Oregon Lions Sight & Hearing Foundation celebrated a historic milestone as our School Vision Screening program screened its 200,000th student at Pilot Butte Middle School in Bend-La Pine School District, coordinated by Jon Awbrey.

This achievement reflects extraordinary growth and impact across Oregon. In the 2022-23 school year, we screened just under 160,000 students during our first fully regular year following the pandemic recovery period. In just three years, our program has grown by more than 20%, and today we are reaching approximately 35% of Oregon students statewide.

We are also proud to partner with more than 80% of Oregon public school districts to provide critical sight and hearing screenings that support student success both inside and outside the classroom.

What began decades ago as a much smaller effort screening approximately 10,000 to 20,000 students annually has grown into the largest year in program history. Reaching more than 200,000 screenings for the first time is a testament to the dedication of our volunteers, coordinators, schools, districts, and community partners across Oregon.

Thank you to every volunteer, coordinator, school, and partner who made this milestone possible. πŸ’™πŸ§‘

For more than a decade, Lions have helped protect the sight and hearing of students across Northern Oregon through dedicated school screenings and service to local communities.

From 2012–2026, Brad King screened students across Northern Oregon, from Tillamook to Portland to the Idaho border, reaching an incredible 441,882 students.

From 2019–2026, Bert Diamond screened students throughout the Greater Portland area, reaching 114,331 students.

Together, that represents more than 556,000 students screened across Oregon. Thank you, Brad and Bert, for your extraordinary commitment to children, families, and our mission. πŸ¦πŸ’™πŸ§‘
