We were honored to be invited aboard the American Cruise Line ship on August 11th for a firsthand look at the vessel and an opportunity to learn more about the safety and security considerations that come with welcoming cruise passengers to our community. The tour of the ship was educational to say the least.
As The Dalles continues to receive international recognition and welcomes more visitors from around the world, it is important that we, as a public safety agency, continue to adapt, prepare, and find ways to better serve both our community and its guests. Preparation is essential, and that was the primary reason for our visit.
We met some great people aboard the ship and gained valuable insight into how the crew prepares for and responds to situations that could arise. Having that firsthand knowledge and understanding is an important part of making sure we are prepared to work together should the need ever arise.
The City of The Dalles is fortunate to be included on the American Cruise Line itinerary, and our department will continue doing everything we can to help ensure the safety of our visitors, cruise passengers, and our community.
And yes, we know…Captain Mathew looks like he’s about 14 years old! 😂 But we quickly learned that he has a pretty impressive and lengthy career in the maritime industry.
A big thank you to American Cruise Line, Captain Mathew, his crew, Patrick (Security) and everyone who took the time to welcome us aboard and share their knowledge with us.
Most importantly, thank you to our community—and to all of our “guests”—for putting your trust in us. We’re proud to serve The Dalles and look forward to continuing to work together to keep our community safe.
