Meet Dana, who began serving at Canopy in 2021 as a front desk volunteer. In 2021, Dana was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and two years later, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She has since recovered from both. A nurse introduced her to Canopy Cancer Survivorship Center and she eventually came for a tour.

As she learned about the many resources available to survivors, Dana experienced something unexpected—it was the first time she truly felt at ease. There was no pressure, no judgment, just acceptance and understanding.

Dana is passionate about giving back. She is an active member of the Assistance League of Montgomery County, where she volunteers at the Assistance League Thrift Shop in Conroe. She also serves on the scholarship committee, supports Operation School Bell and is a member of the Assault Survivorship Team.

We are incredibly grateful for Dana's warmth, spirit and positivity she shares with everyone she encounters at Canopy.

We had a wonderful time partnering with Wonders & Worries and Junior League of The Woodlands, Inc. for a Teddy Bear Clinic! Using teddy bears, children and teens of parents with cancer learned about medical equipment and the treatments that their loved ones may experience. It was a joyful, hands-on day filled with learning, laughter and connection. Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the event so special.

Congratulations to volunteer coordinator Hazel Hayes being honored as a 2026 Montgomery County Women of Distinction for her service, commitment and the countless ways she strengthens and uplifts those around her.

Hazel began volunteering in October 2016 shortly after Canopy opened its doors, looking for a meaningful way to give back to her new community. She stepped into the role of volunteer coordinator, taking on the responsibility of training and scheduling a dedicated team of volunteers.

Beyond coordinating volunteers, she serves at the front desk, where her warmth and kindness create a welcoming environment for anyone navigating cancer. As Canopy has grown, Hazel worked alongside leadership to expand and sustain a thriving volunteer program, making sure every volunteer feels prepared, supported, and connected to our mission.

Known for her calm demeanor, reliability, and positive spirit, Hazel approaches every challenge with thoughtfulness and grace, often stepping in behind the scenes to ensure smooth support for our programs and guests. For nearly a decade, Hazel's leadership, knowledge and dedication have shaped Canopy's culture and success.

The Woodlands British Ladies Club recently stopped by for a special visit that included a tour and conversation. After a tour of the center, we shared our gratitude for their generous donation from their bake sale this past fall. Their kindness and community spirit directly support the survivors and caregivers we serve each day. We are so grateful for their partnership and continued support.
