A few weeks ago, I became a patient instead of the doctor.

The Random Lake Fire & EMTs who saved my life? Nearly all volunteers. Just like most rural communities across this country, they’re not getting paid to run toward emergencies - they’re doing it because someone has to.

In rural America, volunteer first responders are disappearing. Departments are struggling to fill rosters. Response times are getting longer. And when seconds matter, that’s life or death.

These folks showed up for me without hesitation, just like they show up for their neighbors every single time that pager goes off - at dinner, in the middle of the night, during their kids’ birthday parties. They leave everything and run.

So here’s what I’m asking: Thank your local first responders. Volunteer if you can. Support funding for rural EMS and fire departments. Support them at town meetings. Speak up about this crisis before it’s too late.

Rural communities deserve heroes who don’t have to choose between saving lives and paying their own bills.

Thank you, Jacob and the entire Random Lake Fire & EMTs. You saved my life. I won’t forget it.

PS: Happy belated birthday, Jim, and thank you for 52 YEARS OF SERVICE to your community!

At the January annual meeting of Juneau EMS, EMT Dan Zank was presented with his 40 years of service pin. He has been serving our community since 1985. Thank you Dan for your continued service and dedication. We greatly appreciate it.

As of 10am this morning, our new ambulance is officially approved to service Fox Lake and surrounding communites! Our EMS crew has spent countless hours getting the new rig stocked and road ready.
In December, Fox Lake ran 27 EMS calls.
In 2025, we ran 296 EMS calls.
What an amazing day to be a part of Fox Lake!
