With Mayor Estenson-Trailblazer Days Has Arrived!

The weekend has finally arrived, and with it comes the long-anticipated Trailblazer Days celebration. This event is shaping up to be an absolute gem of the summer and a fitting way for our community to celebrate America 250.

You may have already noticed the activity picking up around town. As visitors arrive, let's do what Thermopolis does best, welcome them, make them feel at home, and show them why this community is such a special place.

A huge thank you goes out to the countless volunteers, organizers, sponsors, businesses, and community members who have put in long hours to bring this event to life. These events don't happen by accident, and they certainly don't happen without people willing to step up and make them happen.

I, for one, am incredibly excited.

Be sure to check the event information that has been shared on this page so you know where to park, where shuttle service is available, and when the many activities are taking place.

Upcoming Council Meeting:

Council will meet this coming Tuesday evening. The primary item on the agenda will be the third reading of the Town's annual budget.

Council will also discuss touchdown fireworks for Bobcat football games. I intend to treat this discussion a bit like a workshop within the regular meeting. We learned a lot from last season, and this will be an opportunity to discuss what worked well, what concerns were raised, and how we might move forward in the future.

Bobcat Update:

Congratulations to the Bobcat Football Team on winning the Border Battle at their football camp in the Black Hills this past week.

More importantly, from everything I've heard, they represented our school and our community exceptionally well. Well done, Bobcats.

Whether you're attending the parade, enjoying the festivities at the fairgrounds and museum, floating the river or simply visiting with friends and neighbors, I hope everyone has a wonderful Trailblazer Days weekend.

Take care of each other, and God Bless.

Trailblazer Days is Almost Here!:

Trailblazer Days is coming this weekend and is shaping up to be one of the gems of the summer. It is also our community's opportunity to celebrate America's 250th Birthday and reflect on the pioneering spirit that helped build this nation and our town.

Information on activities, schedules, and events has been shared on this page. Be sure to check it out and make plans to join the fun.

Please note that downtown will be closed to vehicle traffic before and during the parade, and shuttle service will be available to help with parking and transportation. Plan accordingly and give yourself a little extra time to get where you're going.

Council Update:

Council met this past week and approved multiple 24-hour alcohol permits and catering permits, including several related to Trailblazer Days festivities.

Council also approved a request from One Eyed Buffalo Brewing Company to host a parking lot party on June 27th, a 21-and-over event featuring live music. Additionally, Council approved a downtown street closure for another concert event planned for September 5th. More details on that event will be coming later.

Council continued its discussion of the Town's annual budget. The budget received another thorough review, and the third reading will take place at the next meeting.

Council also discussed this year's Spring Cleanup Program and expressed frustration with the abuse of the free dumpster service. While the misuse may not have come from Town residents, it does raise concerns about the sustainability of the program. As the new Transfer Station project moves forward, Council acknowledged that this annual event will likely need to evolve in the future.

Good News for Transportation Planning:

We also received welcome news from Cheyenne. Governor Mark Gordon has graciously offered to fund the Town's local match requirement for the Safe Streets for All Study Grant.

This contribution represents more than $40,000, covering the Town's portion of a roughly $160,000 grant that will help us better plan for transportation and safety improvements in the future.

Thank you, Governor Gordon, for your support of Thermopolis and communities across Wyoming.

We look forward to seeing everyone downtown this weekend. Trailblazer Days is a celebration of our history, our community, and the people who make Thermopolis special.

Take care of each other, and God Bless.

With Mayor Estenson

Summer is officially in full swing, and last week's events were a fantastic way to kick off the season.

A sincere thank you goes out to all of the volunteers, organizers, sponsors, businesses, participants, and especially everyone who came out and attended. Community events only succeed when people show up and support them, and Thermopolis once again demonstrated what makes this town special.

We did receive some feedback regarding the concerts and rodeo activities running a bit later into the evening than some residents would have preferred. While events of this scale are not an everyday occurrence, we hear those concerns and will work with organizers to review timing and scheduling as we plan for next year.

Upcoming Council Meeting:

Town Council will have a very full agenda this coming Tuesday. The primary item will be the second reading of the annual budget, along with several citizen participation items and other matters of town business.

As always, we encourage residents to attend in person or follow along online.

Trailblazer Days is Almost Here:

Be sure to mark your calendars for Trailblazer Days, now just a few weeks away. One of Thermopolis' signature summer events for the year is shaping up to be another great celebration of our community, history, and western heritage. This will also be the communities' big blow out for America 250!

With Mayor Estenson

As we head into Memorial Day weekend, I want to take a moment to reflect on what this holiday truly means.

Whenever I walk through our cemeteries here in Thermopolis, I find myself looking at the names of the men and women who served this country. Those names are not just letters etched into stone, they belonged to real people. People who laughed, loved, worked, raised families, and lived right here in this community. Their stories still echo through Thermopolis today.

Memorial Day is about remembering the cost of the freedoms we enjoy and honoring those who never made it home. May we never forget them.

Schools:
Congratulations to the entire Hot Springs County School District on another successful school year. We wish all students, staff, and families a happy, safe, and well-deserved summer vacation.

Town Hall Update:
After 34 years of service to this community, John Webber is retiring from the Town of Thermopolis. John has spent decades quietly serving this town and helping keep things clean day in and day out. Thank you, John, for your years of dedication to Thermopolis. Stop by Town Hall on the 29th at 2pm to honor John.

We also received exciting news regarding the 14th Street Rehabilitation Project. Our request was accepted by the U.S. House Appropriations Committee, and the project will now be included in the proposed appropriations bill before the full House.

While funding is not guaranteed yet, this was the largest hurdle in the process. A sincere thank you goes to Congresswoman Harriet Hageman and her staff for their efforts and assistance in helping move this project forward.

Council Update:
Council also met Tuesday evening. The first reading of the draft budget passed following discussion, particularly regarding the Police Department budget. Stay tuned as Council continues fine-tuning the budget through upcoming readings and discussions.

There are also two big community events happening this weekend:

The traditional 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament at the high school

It’s shaping up to be a fantastic weekend in Thermopolis.

*Reminder that Town Hall will be closed on Monday as well.

Have a meaningful and safe Memorial Day weekend!

Hot City Hot Seat – May 18, 2026
CONGRATUALTIONS CLASS OF 2026!

I appreciate everyone’s patience with this week’s delayed update.

Last Friday, I was in Casper testifying before the Wyoming Joint Labor, Health & Social Services Interim Committee on behalf of our 911 emergency communications professionals here in Thermopolis and across Wyoming.

Currently, 911 dispatchers and communications operators are often not legally classified as first responders, despite the reality of the work they do every day. Alongside Mayor Rebecca George of Worland, I presented an interim topic for committee consideration that would formally recognize these professionals as the first responders they truly are and provide a pathway for mental health treatment through Workers’ Compensation.

These professionals work long hours, often alone, moving from crisis call to crisis call without pause. They are the first voice many people hear on the worst day of their lives, and too often they are the last remembered after the incident is over.

Our dispatch team at the Thermopolis Police Department, which serves the entire county, is one of the best in the State. I have heard this repeatedly from professionals across Wyoming in this field. It was an honor to stand up and speak on behalf of all of you.

I would also like to sincerely thank the Joint Committee for voting unanimously to take on this topic and begin work on draft legislation.

Class of 2026:

Congratulations to the Hot Springs County High School Class of 2026. You are a shining example of what Thermopolis is all about, and you will carry that light into the world. Never forget your roots and always come home.

As classes let out district-wide for the summer, we wish all students, staff, and families a very happy, safe, and well-deserved summer break.

Town Council:

Town Council will meet again this coming Tuesday. The agenda will be somewhat lighter than recent meetings; however, Council will receive the first draft of the Town’s annual budget for review and discussion.

We encourage everyone to attend in person or follow along online.

Hot City Hot Seat – May 8, 2026
With Mayor Estenson

First, I want to thank the Town Council for covering things during my absence this week. A special thank you goes to Councilman Dusty Lewis for stepping in as Mayor Pro Tem and helping keep things moving smoothly.

Council officially approved the appointment of Connie Guntly as our new Town Clerk/Treasurer. Connie was sworn in by Crystal Jackman, our Utilities and Municipal Court Clerk. We are excited for Connie as she officially steps into this important role serving the community.

While I was away, Council also had some robust discussion regarding a few zoning matters within Town limits. Conversations like these are an important part of local government, and I appreciate Council’s willingness to thoughtfully work through issues that shape the future of Thermopolis.

It is also worth once again recognizing our local healthcare professionals during Nurses Week. Thank you to all our nurses and healthcare workers for the compassion, dedication, and care you provide to this community every single day.

And yes! the Mayor and Chief Cornwell did in fact spend some time in the dunk tank during the Blessing of the Bikes festivities.

A huge thank you once again to the 1890’s Riders for putting on another outstanding event and including us in the fun. It was great to see the community come together and enjoy a beautiful Wyoming day.

Take care of each other, and God Bless.
— Mayor Adam R. Estenson
