NO POLITICS - COMMUNITY SAFETY FIRST!
At the request of the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office, the Thibodaux City Marshal’s Office assisted with security at the front gate for last night’s opening-season football game between the Thibodaux High School Tigers and E.D. White Catholic High School Cardinals.
This was, without a doubt, one of the biggest high school football games I’ve witnessed in Thibodaux. In my 36 years in law enforcement, I have never seen an entrance line stretch from the stadium gates all the way to Tiger Drive!
It is always a pleasure when the Sheriff’s Office calls on our office to assist with school-event security. We have built a strong working relationship over the years, and I believe law-enforcement agencies should work together—not against one another—to keep our community safe.
Unfortunately, beginning January 1, 2027, HB 1038 could impact this partnership unless the Thibodaux City Council adopts an ordinance granting the Thibodaux City Marshal’s Office the same criminal and traffic enforcement authority as the Thibodaux Police Department.
That concerns me because public safety should never be caught in the middle of politics. Unfortunately, both the former and current Mayors have expressed support for HB-1038, a decision I believe could have serious implications for cooperation between local law-enforcement agencies.
After last night’s game, I received a call from a concerned Thibodaux resident who reported hearing police scanner traffic regarding several vehicles allegedly being burglarized in the parking area near Tiger Drive and Plantation Road, with reports that fi****ms may have been taken.
This concern alone highlights why parking-lot security matters and why all law-enforcement agencies should be working together to protect our community.
During my tenure with the Thibodaux Police Department, I initiated additional outside parking-lot patrols and lighting during the Fireman’s Fair and Thibodaux High School football games. The goal was simple: protect people walking to and from their vehicles and help protect their property while they enjoyed community events.
I have always maintained a good professional relationship with the current Chief of Police, and I remain willing to work with his department and every other law-enforcement agency to help keep our residents and visitors safe.
Unfortunately, it appears the former and current Mayors have chosen a different approach—“ONE BAND, ONE SOUND.” When politics dictates who can work together, our community’s safety is the one that suffers.
I believe there should be no political barriers when it comes to protecting our community.
As we approach the upcoming election, I believe the people of Thibodaux deserve to understand what is happening and how these decisions could affect public safety.
My promise is simple:
No matter who you elect as Mayor, I will be willing to work with that administration, the Thibodaux Police Department, the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office, and every other law-enforcement partner willing to work together to keep our community safe.
Because when it comes to public safety, THERE SHOULD BE NO POLITICS—ONLY PARTNERSHIP.
