Noisy Library

Noisy Library The Arts-Multimedia Center was a Department of Ellender Library at Nicholls State University. It is It still houses scores as well as audio and visual materials.

Arts-Multimedia was located on the third floor of Ellender Library at Nicholls State University. Until 30 June 2013, it will continue to house musical instruments and technology to help people in the Nicholls community learn how to read music, play new instruments, study music in its full context, and to incorporate musical instruments in teaching/instruction. The Center houses Western Art (includ

ing historical) and world music instruments. FREE workshops, concerts, lectures, and other learning opportunities have been provided throughout the year. Materials in the Space are funded by a Louisiana Board of Regents'-Enhancement University Grant plus an Institutional Technology Match. Materials (for example, DVDs and models) are being moved downstairs to purposely have a negative impact on departmental statistics.

Though the Space for the Teaching/Learning Music still exists on the 3rd floor, there have been plans to "disband" the Multimedia Department. Final pictures of students using the Center will be posted soon. This page will continue to exist, but the name of the page and its purpose will change soon. The arts need to continue to have successful advocacy at Nicholls. The instruments, as you will see in the upcoming pictures, were much more than "paperweights," as described by certain powers that be.

Our other instrument from India (more specifically the Punjab region from North India and Pakistan) is a dhol. Ours has goat skin heads and is very colorful! These are the drumsticks to be used with the instrument. A more secure strap is certainly needed, since the one it came with is also part of the instrument's decoration. If you scratch and sniff at your computer monitors long enough, you can smell the goat. Photo credit: Sydney Shaw Photography.

This photograph shows the drumming surfaces of the tabla. Thanks to Sydney Shaw Photography. The middle of the drum, which is black, is made from crushed train rails that have been burned (where the dark color comes from).

Here is a student exploring our tabla set. The drum on his right is the tabla. The one on his left is a brass bayan. Our set has 16-bolt tuning. He is sitting near the computers, so he can play along or watch lessons on YouTube. Here he is just playing on his own.
