Letโ€™s give a huge round of applause to our amazing bus drivers and monitors who achieved perfect attendance for the month of August!

The first month of school is always busy as everyone adjusts to new routes and new routines, but these dedicated team members didn't miss a beat. Rain or shine, they showed up every single day to ensure our students traveled to and from school safely.

Thank you all for your unwavering commitment, reliability, and care for our students. You keep LPSD moving forward!

The first progress reports of the school year go home today. This means weโ€™re already halfway through the first nine weeks. This marking period ends Oct. 8, and report cards will be issued Oct. 15.

Parents and guardians, please take a few minutes to review your childโ€™s progress report. This is a great opportunity to monitor your childโ€™s academic growth, celebrate successes, and identify areas where additional support may be needed.

You can also view your childโ€™s grades at any time using the OnCourse Connect mobile app or web portal.

Thank you for partnering with us as we work together to help every student succeed.

Five years ago today, on August 29, 2021, Hurricane Ida made landfall at Port Fourchon as a fierce Category 4 storm. As it pushed northward across Lafourche Parish, it left behind a trail of destruction that reshaped our landscape and changed our community forever. The impact was immediate and catastrophic. The entire parish lost power almost instantly, leaving 95 percent of residents in the dark for weeks as utility crews completely rebuilt the electrical grid. In lower Lafourche, nearly 75 percent of homes sustained major structural damage or total loss, displacing thousands of families and forcing neighbors into makeshift tents, temporary trailers, or damaged homes.

Our school district felt the full force of Ida's wrath, with severe damage across nearly all campuses and administrative facilities. Hurricane-force winds tore away roofs, allowing torrential water intrusion that destroyed ceilings, walls, flooring, and electrical infrastructure. Initial damage estimates across district facilities reached a staggering $150 to $200 million in combined structural, equipment, and contents losses.

Yet, in the face of unprecedented adversity, the spirit of Lafourche Parish proved unbreakable.

The district immediately launched a comprehensive, multi-year disaster recovery plan funded by insurance payouts, low-interest bridge loans, and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) public assistance reimbursements. The first meeting with contractors was held just a couple of days after landfall, on Sept. 1. Thibodaux area schools were able to return less than a month later on Sept. 27, with Central Lafourche area schools following a week later on Oct. 4. In South Lafourche, where damage was heaviest, schools reopened on Oct. 18, with the exception of Larose-Cut Off Middle on Oct. 20.

Throughout every challenge, our core mission has never wavered: to repair our facilities, strengthen our infrastructure, and welcome every student back to their home campus. To date, Hurricane Ida recovery has cost the district more than $160 million. Insurance proceeds have covered $20 million, while FEMA has reimbursed nearly $73 million, with an additional $17 million officially obligated for upcoming costs. The remaining $50 million represents the districtโ€™s responsibility, supported through low-interest bridge loans serviced by our general fund.

Today, the vast majority of our students are back in modern, fully restored classrooms. Permanent rebuilding efforts remain underway at two of our most heavily impacted sites, Bayou Boeuf Elementary and Golden Meadow Middle School, both of which are scheduled to reopen their doors soon.

While work remains on the horizon, looking back over the last five years has demonstrated the extraordinary resilience of Lafourche Parish. Our progress stands as a testament to the resolve and strength of our staff, students, families, and community members. Together, we have proven that while a storm can damage our buildings, it cannot break the spirit of our LPSD family.
