On Sunday, February 8th 2026 shortly after 7 A.M. , a homeowner in the 2400 Block of Elizabeth Street was alerted to a smoke smell inside his residence by an activated smoke alarm.
The homeowner quickly discovered that his outside patio was on fire and tried to extinguish the fire with a fire extinguisher. The homeowner then observed that the fire had already traveled into the attic space of his residence and ran to the neighbors residence to call 911 !!!
Shortly thereafter, the St. John Volunteer Fire Department was toned out and responded to the reported structure fire. Upon arrival, firefighters were met with heavy smoke & moderate fire conditions.
Firefighters then went to work and properly extinguished the fire with no injuries to the on scene firemen. A total of 25 firefighters, 3 Engines, 1 Tanker, 2 Services Trucks and Two Chief Officers responded to the incident .
The St. John Volunteer Fire Department would like to commend our dedicated volunteers, not only for their time, but more importantly for the professional service they provide to our Great Thibodaux Community !!!
A special โ Thank You โ goes out to our Louisiana State Fire Marshal Bryan Adams who is leading the charge to insure that working smoke detectors are available & installed in every home across the State Of Louisiana !!! This great initiative โ Operation Save A Life โ saved 3 citizens and 1 dogโs life this morning.
During the course of the fire investigation, it was determined that the fire started as a result of an energized electrical heating lamp, left outside on the patio to keep the homeownerโs dog warm during the night hours.
