For all that have read, copied and posted the “HEY LAFOURCHE PARISH ASSESSOR- I’M TALKING TO YOU!” post - here are the FACTS, not hypotheticals, about what I am REQUIRED by law to do as an
Ad Valorem Assessor.
First - Ad Valorem means “according to value”. According to Louisiana Law, I am REQUIRED to put a value on all property according to its market value. If you disagree with this - then contact your state legislators to change the law to say Assessors have to value property at the sale price. I would then be able to value your property not by the market value but by the sale price (your $170,000 example). This would make my job so much easier and eliminate reassessment, which is the one part of my job I absolutely hate!
Second - you the voters are responsible for the amount of taxes you pay. If you think your property taxes are too high - then stop voting for millages and exemptions. These are 2 major factors that increase taxes. They have millage renewals in the June election and an inventory exemption option on the May ballot… Vote NO for all of it. Exemptions sound great but it just redistributes their taxes to everyone that still pays taxes.
My job is very complex and I understand everyone wants to believe there is a simple solution to the tax problems we have in Louisiana but I promise the answer is not here on Facebook from an anonymous poster.
As always, if you have any other questions or concerns, please let me know and I will be happy to address them.
Wendy L. Thibodeaux, CLA
