On Thursday, Detective Koval and Detective St. Onge, of the Thomaston Police Department were invited to the Thomaston Senior Center meeting to give a presentation about scams targeting seniors and elder fraud. We thank you for the invitation and hopefully everybody present learned some tips to help protect themselves from the many types of scams out there. Remember, slow down, verify the source, and ask for help from a trusted family member before taking any actions involving financial decisions.

Over the last several days Thomaston Police Department has responded to numerous incidents of “Unresponsive person(s)” in a motor vehicle. In each of these incidents, the vehicles involved were located with an unresponsive operator, with the vehicle in DRIVE. These incidents collectively have resulted in several arrests and seizures of various narcotics, including he**in and fentanyl.

We want to remind the general public, if a person is located unconscious in a vehicle, there are many inherent dangers of the situation, including the possibility of uncontrolled acceleration of the vehicle, other passing vehicles, or the unknown contents of the vehicle. Unknown to a Good Samaritan, there could be narcotics such as fentanyl, or he**in in close proximity to the person, and often Police Officers locate uncapped needles during narcotic investigations.

Should a Good Samaritan attempt to assist an unresponsive person, please be aware of the potential dangers of the situation and the possibility of exposure to fentanyl, he**in, and other illicit substances.

If you believe a person is unresponsive in a vehicle, dial 911 immediately, and follow any directions given by the dispatcher. Don’t get injured or become an accidental overdose victim yourself.

National Police Week is an annual observance established in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy, designating May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which it falls as National Police Week.
