People often ask what we do when we don’t have students. We plan, plant, clean, remove invasive plants, dream, plan some more, repair trails, fix dams, create new learning experiences, build outdoor classrooms, do research, restock, hire a new field tech, mow, trim, reorganize, trim trees, brainstorm to improve, and so much more! We do whatever it takes to offer incredible learning excursions and experiences for students. In September we begin our fifth year. We can hardly wait!

Often described as “tiny,” “dainty,” or “delicate,” the Northern Parula is one of North America's smallest wood-warblers. It typically is 4” long and weighs 0.2 to 0.4 ounces. This beauty took a dip at the drip rock then perched just outside the window.

🌿 Happy World Nature Conservation Day! 🌎
Nature inspires, teaches, and sustains us—and it's up to all of us to protect it.

At Gentian Creek Preserve, we're proud to inspire the next generation to love, appreciate, and conserve the natural world through hands-on environmental education.

Today, we encourage you to step outside, observe something wild, and remember that even small actions can make a lasting difference for our planet.

What’s with all the flowers?🌻🌼🌸🌱
We’ve partnered with The University of Georgia in a three-year study on how to build thriving pollinator habitats and also explore the intricate relationships between plants and beneficial insects. Forty species of native wildflowers and grasses—more than 500 transplants as well as thousands of seeds— were planted in a research plot in our meadow. The study focuses on how the plants establish and grow, which insects they attract, and what makes both plants and pollinators successful partners. This week members of the UGA project team visited to collect data on mid-season survival, growth parameters and floral display. The team visits periodically to monitor the plants and pollinators.

“No matter where you live, forests and trees use their many powers to support our lives—and all life on Earth. Their health is our health.”

Dendrology students from Dr. Jeremy Green’s class at Southern Regional Technical College visited this week to hone their identification skills. Among the many native species they found on GCP were American Beech, Eastern Hophornbeam, Spruce Pine, Eastern Redbud, Swamp Chestnut Oak, and Buttonbush.
