As racing fans turn their attention to tomorrow's Belmont Stakes, we're enjoying this look back at a horse whose lineage connected her to some of the sport's greatest champions.

We're sharing another treasure from the archives featuring one of Elisabeth "Pansy" Ireland Poe's racehorses. Pictured here is Peeress competing in a race in Dublin, Ireland, in May 1961.

This mare boasted an impressive pedigree, with legendary bloodlines that included Nasrullah, War Admiral, and Man o' War—some of the most influential names in Thoroughbred racing history.

Summertime and the laughter of children at play!

We were delighted to welcome campers from the Tallahassee Museum summer camp to Pebble Hill yesterday and today. Their curiosity, energy, and excitement filled the grounds with the joyful sounds that make summer so special.

There’s nothing quite like seeing young people exploring, learning, and making memories outdoors. The laughter echoing across the property was a wonderful reminder of what summer is all about.

Thank you to the campers and counselors for spending part of your summer with us—we loved having you here! pebblehill.com Tallahassee Museum COCA / Tallahassee Arts WFSU Local Routes Tallahassee Democrat Fun4TallyKids

We were delighted to welcome two special guests to Pebble Hill Plantation yesterday: Gail Blackman Eubanks and Cal Avery, better known as The Barn Hunter!

Cal is on a mission to photograph historic barns across Georgia and has documented barns in every county except Thomas and Brooks—until now. With yesterday's visit, he officially checked those final two counties off his list while capturing images of Pebble Hill's historic barns.

Be sure to like and follow The Barn Hunter page to see his incredible work and keep an eye out for stunning photos of Pebble Hill Plantation later this summer! pebblehill.com Travel Georgia The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation Georgia Association of Museums Travel South USA

One of the most striking architectural features of the Main House at Pebble Hill Plantation is its magnificent freestanding staircase.

Designed by architect Abram Garfield, the staircase was constructed in his Cleveland, Ohio, studio to ensure it would stand entirely on its own. Once completed, it was carefully disassembled, shipped by train to Thomasville, and reassembled in the Main House.

More than a means of reaching the second floor, the staircase is a remarkable feat of craftsmanship and engineering. Its graceful curves, elegant proportions, and dramatic presence make it one of the most memorable features of the house and a favorite of visitors. https://pebblehill.com/ Travel Georgia Travel South USA

On this day, 4 June 1961, Violet Munnings opened Castle House to the public. She had shared this home with her husband, renowned British sporting artists, Sir Alfred Munnings.

Violet sought to preserve the house as a lasting tribute to her husband with hopes that it would "last a thousand years." Today, The Munnings Art Museum, located in Colchester, United Kingdom, attracts visitors from around the world.

Here at Pebble Hill Plantation's Elisabeth Ireland Poe Gallery, we are proud to display the jewel of our sporting art collection: My Horse is My Friend: The Artist's Wife and Isaac.

Painted in 1922, just two years into Alfred and Violet's marriage, the work depicts Violet with the artist's beloved horse, Isaac. The horse was purchased in Ireland and named after his original owner, Mr. Isaac Bell, Master of the Kilkenny Foxhounds. The painting beautifully reflects Munnings' affection for both his wife and his horses, subjects that featured prominently throughout his career.

Visit us today to tour the Elisabeth Ireland Poe Gallery and admire this magnificent masterpiece. pebblehill.com COCA / Tallahassee Arts Thomasville Center for the Arts The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Florida State University Albany Area Arts The Arts Center of Moultrie Arts – British Council

Most people are familiar with the rich tradition of thoroughbred horse racing in the Red Hills region, but did you know that Pebble Hill Plantation also has ties to harness racing?

Pictured here is Perry Williams Harvey, Kate Hanna Ireland's second husband and stepfather to Pansy Poe, with one of his trotting horses. Visible in the background is Archbold Hospital, helping place this photograph in historic Thomasville.

Harvey and a group of friends operated Pastime Stables, located in the area of present-day Devereaux Drive and Pastime Drive. During the winter months, the stables served as a training facility for harness horses that would compete on northern racing circuits during the warmer months.

Harness racing was popular among several local plantation owners. Other area plantations maintained their own tracks, including Rosewood and Winnstead, the plantation of Kate's sister, Gertrude Hanna Haskell. pebblehill.com
