American Artist Appreciation Month: Richard Bishop

Today marks the final day of American Artist Appreciation Month, and we’re pleased to close out the month by featuring American painter and printmaker Richard Evett Bishop (1887–1975).

Bishop was renowned for his detailed wildlife art, particularly his depictions of game birds, ducks, and geese. His background in engineering, combined with his passion for hunting and the outdoors, contributed to the remarkable precision and detail found in his etchings and paintings.

Several of Bishop’s works are part of the Pebble Hill Collection, including one signed especially for Elisabeth “Pansy” Ireland Poe. His connection to Pebble Hill extends beyond the collection—Bishop also designed the Pebble Hill Plantation hunting pin, which was presented to guests who successfully bagged a turkey while hunting here.

Today, you can purchase a reproduction of this historic pin in our Visitors’ Center—a wonderful keepsake for anyone who appreciates Pebble Hill’s rich sporting heritage.

We hope you’ve enjoyed celebrating American artists with us throughout the month and invite you tour Pebble Hill and the Elisabeth Ireland Poe Gallery. Our August closure has given us the opportunity to tackle both large and small preservation projects throughout the Main House. One of the projects underway is plaster work in the hallway leading to the Kitchen.

While our visitors haven’t been able to see the work taking place, our dedicated team has been busy behind the scenes caring for this historic home and helping ensure that Pebble Hill remains beautiful for generations to come.

The wait is almost over! We reopen for tours tomorrow, September 1. We look forward to welcoming you back to Pebble Hill! pebblehill.com
