October 22 is National Color Day!

Today is a wonderful opportunity to appreciate the beauty, meaning, and emotional impact of color—and at Pebble Hill Plantation, there is no better place to celebrate than the magnificent Big Room.

When Elisabeth “Pansy” Ireland Poe commissioned Florida artist J. Clinton Shepherd to create a mural for the Big Room, she envisioned bringing the beauty of the outdoors she loved so dearly into her home.

The result is a stunning work of art filled with vivid colors, soaring birds, and the natural beauty of the South Georgia landscape. The brilliant turquoise sky, soft white clouds, and graceful mallards capture the spirit of the outdoors and reflect Pansy’s deep appreciation for nature.

Art and nature come together at Pebble Hill Plantation, where every detail tells a story about the people, passions, and history of this remarkable place.

This fascinating photograph from the Pebble Hill Plantation archives captures the construction of the Main House in 1936, with the 1914 Loggia Wing clearly visible.

The Loggia Wing was added to the original 1850s house by architect Abram Garfield and miraculously survived the devastating 1934 fire. Thanks to the heroic efforts of a bucket brigade using water from the swimming pool, this important part of Pebble Hill’s architectural history was saved!

Garfield went on to design the magnificent Main House we know today. Encompassing approximately 30,000 square feet, the house features 16 bedrooms, 19 bathrooms, and a full basement—a remarkable example of historic architecture and craftsmanship.

Dogs and Pebble Hill Plantation just naturally go together! Throughout Pebble Hill’s history, there were always 75–100 dogs on the property, from the foxhound pack to the beloved canine companions who shared the Main House with the family.

Elisabeth Ireland Poe, whose 129th birthday is October 31, helped establish Thomasville’s first humane society. In honor of her birthday and her legacy of compassion for animals, Pebble Hill Plantation is collecting donations for Thomasville Humane as part of our community’s Bicentennial celebration.

Our goal is 200 donations for 200 years of Thomasville history.

Want to help? Here are two easy ways to participate:

Before Halloween: Bring your donations of pet food, cat litter, pet toys, or other pet supplies to Pebble Hill Plantation Visitors’ Center.

On Halloween: Drop off your donations at the Pebble Hill Plantation tent during the Thomasville History Center’s Halloween in the Historic Neighborhood event from 5–7 p.m. on October 31 at 725 N. Dawson Street.

Let’s celebrate our community’s history by caring for the animals who need us today.
