This past Friday, June 5, 2026, McDuffie County was pleased to welcome members of the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation as part of a Colonial America history tour that included a visit to the historic Rock House, the Wrightsboro Church, and the Bowdre-Rees-Knox house. The group then visited sites in Wilkes County.

McDuffie County officials met with the group to discuss the rich history of the Rock House, its significance to our community, and ongoing efforts to preserve this important landmark for future generations.

One particularly special moment during the visit was meeting a descendant of Thomas Ansley’s sister, who is buried in the Ansley Cemetery—a meaningful connection that brought local history to life.

The Rock House remains one of McDuffie County’s most unique historic treasures, and we encourage residents and visitors alike to learn more about its history and ongoing preservation efforts.

If you have a family member, friend, or loved one that may be experiencing cognitive impairment or memory-related concerns, a valuable FREE resource from the University of Georgia CARE Center will be available in our community on Wednesday, June 3rd and Monday, June 8th beginning at 10:30 am at the Depot (111 Railroad St, Thomson, GA 30824). Walk-ins are welcome.

WEATHER & SAFETY UPDATE ⚠️

City of Thomson and McDuffie County Emergency Services, the McDuffie County Sheriff’s Office, and county and city road and street departments have been actively responding throughout the afternoon to multiple reports of downed trees and power lines across our community.

For your safety, please stay away from any downed power lines and use extreme caution around damaged or leaning trees, as conditions may remain hazardous even after storms have passed. Always assume downed lines are energized.

If you see downed trees, power lines, or other hazardous conditions, please report them so emergency crews can respond appropriately.

We sincerely appreciate the continued hard work, dedication, and teamwork of all personnel working to keep our community safe and restore normal operations as quickly as possible.

County and city officials will continue monitoring conditions throughout the night and will reassess conditions again in the morning as crews continue response and recovery efforts. Please continue to use caution while traveling this evening and report emergencies through the appropriate channels.

As Memorial Day approaches, McDuffie County joins our community in honoring and remembering the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. We recognize that behind every fallen service member is a story, a family, and a legacy of selfless service that continues to shape our country and our community. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten, and we remain grateful for the freedoms their courage has preserved.

As we reflect on the meaning of this holiday, residents are also reminded that worn, damaged, or unserviceable American flags may be respectfully retired by placing them in the Official U.S. Flag Retirement Collection Box located in the lobby of the McDuffie County Government Center. This provides a dignified and proper way to dispose of flags in accordance with U.S. Flag Code.

Please note that McDuffie County offices will be closed on Monday, May 25, 2026, in observance of Memorial Day. Regular business hours will resume on Tuesday.

Congratulations to Mrs. Julie Gerlach, McDuffie County’s 2026 Senior Citizen of the Year! 🎉

Yesterday, Chairman Chase Beggs proudly presented the 2026 Senior Citizen of the Year Proclamation to Mrs. Julie Gerlach in recognition of her outstanding dedication, loyalty, and service to our community.

Mrs. Gerlach has spent her life making a difference in the lives of others. A lifelong McDuffie County resident, she dedicated more than 30 years to educating and mentoring students in our public school system while also giving countless hours back through volunteer service.

From supporting activities at the Senior Center, serving as a poll worker, delivering meals to those who are sick or homebound, assisting with Hurricane Helene cleanup efforts, helping beautify our community, and volunteering with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources fish hatchery in Dearing, Mrs. Gerlach exemplifies what it means to live a life of service.

Her compassion, generosity, and servant’s heart have touched countless lives across McDuffie County and continue to inspire those around her.

Please join us in congratulating and thanking Mrs. Julie Gerlach for her extraordinary commitment to serving others and for being named McDuffie County’s 2026 Senior Citizen of the Year! 👏

Last night, the McDuffie County Board of Commissioners proudly recognized Emergency Medical Services Week and honored the dedicated men and women who serve our community through EMS.

EMS professionals are on the front lines 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, providing lifesaving care and support during some of life’s most critical moments. Their commitment, training, compassion, and professionalism make a lasting difference in our community every single day.

This year marks the 52nd anniversary of EMS Week, with the theme “EMS Week: Improving Outcomes, Together.”

McDuffie County extends our sincere appreciation to all EMS personnel for their service, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication to protecting the health and safety of our citizens. 🚑

Board of Commissioners Meeting Reminder

The McDuffie County Board of Commissioners will meet Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at 6:30 PM in the Historic Court House located at 337 Main Street.

The meeting is open to the public.

Please note that this meeting will not be live streamed due to the change in location, as the alternate location is not equipped with live streaming capabilities. The meeting was moved to allow Elections staff to safely and efficiently conduct ballot counting in our regular meeting room. We appreciate your understanding.

McDuffie County is pleased to announce that the County’s Information Technology Department has been selected as a recipient of the Georgia Government Management Information Sciences (GMIS) Government to Citizens (G2C) Award.

Georgia GMIS is a statewide organization comprised of public sector IT professionals, and its annual awards recognize projects that enhance government service delivery through innovation and technology. The G2C Award specifically honors initiatives that improve communication, accessibility, and engagement between local government and the public.

The IT Department was recognized for its project involving upgrades to the Commissioners Assembly Room and the implementation of live streaming for Board of Commissioners meetings. Enhancements included the installation of high-definition cameras, upgraded audio systems, and a secure YouTube streaming platform. Additionally, meeting agendas and presentation materials were integrated into the video stream to improve accessibility for residents.

As a result of receiving this award, the project will advance to represent the State of Georgia in the International GMIS competition.

McDuffie County commends the IT Department for its commitment to transparency, accessibility, and innovation in serving the community.
