Today is ! Short for June 19th, Juneteenth honors, recognizes, and celebrates the abolishment of slavery in the United States.

The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Lincoln in 1863, but it wasn't until June 19, 1865 when soldiers reached Galveston, TX that residents finally learned slavery had been abolished.
